  • Conclusion: The P50 is a no-nonsense little camera. It's fairly compact, has a useful zoom range and doesn't cost very much money. The build quality is good and it is constructed using pleasantly tactile materials. Many people walking into their local store will be able to pick one up, like the way it feels and go off and use it quite happily.
  • Pros: Generally decent image quality (at lowest ISO settings), though nothing 'special', Consistently accurate metering, Useful lens range with true wide-angle, Nice use of materials, D-Lighting can make the best of difficult situations, Icon-based interface is good (and optional), Good range of flash modes and control, Sensible number of scene modes, AA battery convenience
  • Cons: eVR is no substitute for optical stabilization, Soft images with little latitude for additional sharpening in-camera, Lens on our test model had softness on left side of image., Sluggish performance, ISO range more ambitious than capable, Manual control extremely limited, Battery life below average (even for AAs), Long flash recycle times, Sound STILL drops out before videos end, Lots of competition makes P50 look like an 'also ran'

  • Conclusion: On balance I like the Nikon Coolpix P50. It offers fair value for money and is pleasingly easy to use. It may not fit into a pocket, but I like the design and style of the camera.
  • Pros: Large internal memory - bright photos - ease of use - design
  • Cons: Lower light - shutter delay

  • Summary: Small and powerful -- thanks to an 8.1-megapixel sensor -- the P50 is suitable for almost all situations and it even has a decent manual mode to tinker with.
  • Pros: Has a decent manual mode for such a small camera, crisp and clear shots, no obvious chromatic aberration, no obvious lens distortion
  • Cons: Vibration reduction made our shots look too soft, it sometimes mishandled very bright and cloudy conditions

Nikon Coolpix P50

PhotographyBLOG
17 December 2007
  • Summary: We had the black-bodied Nikon Coolpix P50 in for testing, which undoubtedly disguises the fact that it's not the skinniest compact around and the fact that construction is plastic in the main – I doubt the alternate silver version will look or feel quite as sterling (arf!). This all helps the Coolpix P50 to resemble a camera that costs more than it actually does – so first impressions are good, and as we all know, first impressions stick.

  • Cons: Zoom ottico basso
