Coolpix 995 Review

  • Excerpt: An evolutionary step in the Coolpix line. Unfortunately, the step is a small one. Add a comment or send Thom feedback on this article. When the feature list of the 995 first hit the net, it provoked a lot of head-scratching. Where was the increased pixel count? Where were the significant new features? Why did a handful of minor changes justify a new number (Nikon has previously simply added an S to the end of a model number when making minor changes)?
  • Pros: The eject button on the CompactFlash slot is hard to get to. On the 990, the fold-out eject button was at the bottom of card slot and had a larger cutout above it to allow your finger to reach in and fold out the button. On the 995, the eject button is at the top of the card slot, and there's less room to get your finger in to fold the button out. If you've got fat or large fingers, you'll object to the change. The problem went from bad on the 990 to worse on the 995....

  • Conclusion: Here's my rating of the Nikon Coolpix 995: (3 megapixel prosumer) As an evolution the 995 certainly addresses quite a few of our comments / criticisms and those of 990 owners. It also carries forward the "9 series" model to a more rounded and complete conclusion. I'm sure many people will be wondering what's next for the "9 series" of digital cameras. The 995 also has several new features and improvements.
  • Pros: Excellent image quality, superb metering, good colour (better than 990), Relatively sharp with "expected" resolution, Low image noise at ISO 100, relatively clean and usable ISO 200 (better than 990), Less red channel noise than the 990, Large amount of control over internal processing algorithms (contrast, saturation, sharpness), Wide selection of manual control, Largest "photographic" feature set of any other 3 megapixel, Excellent white balance control, Fast proces...
  • Cons: Lens distortion quite apparent (both barrel and pincushion distortion), Chromatic aberrations are still visible (same level as 990), Corners of frame can sometimes appear un-sharp (lens), Relatively "slow" lens (F2.6 - F5.1) compared to some of the competition, Number of shutter speeds / apertures in manual mode is now looking dated, CF Type II support but not Microdrive (slow and not officially supported), Low light AF is poor, still needs an AF assist lamp, LCD scre...

  • Excerpt: My biggest project in the year 2000 was the Nikon Coolpix 990 vs. Olympus C-3030Z review. It was, and still is, an extremely popular review. It was also a very polarizing review: when I picked the C-3030Z as my choice, I received many angry letters from Coolpix fans. My main complaints about the Coolpix were redeye problems, a lackluster movie mode, and fewer manual controls than the C-3030Z.
  • Pros: Excellent photo quality, The, camera for macro shots, Every manual control ever conceived, New 4X optical zoom lens, Pop-up flash reduces redeye, Support for external lenses, filters, and flashes, Lots of info about your photos in playback mode
  • Cons: Proprietary battery, No sound in movie mode, Very complex- takes lots of time to learn

  • Summary: Első ránézésre a Coolpix 990 és a 995 modell között a különbség az objektíven és a vakun látszik. A négyszeres optikai zoom (38-152 mm kisfilmes gépnél), 8 csoportban szerelt 10 lencsetagból áll (ezek közül 2 aszferikus lencse) - mindegyik NIKON-SIC (Super Integrated Coating).
