DP Review

  • Conclusion: The Coolpix 8800 is out to prove that it's a credible alternative to the new cheaper digital SLR's and a set of lenses. From a practicality stand point it certainly delivers, in a package not much bigger than the smallest D-SLR you get eight megapixels and a 35 - 350 mm equiv. lens with Vibration Reduction. Next you consider the price, which may seem high but when you take into account how much a D-SLR and matching set of lenses would cost it does start to make sense.
  • Pros: Biggest zoom of any eight megapixel, with Vibration Reduction, Sharp lens, at both ends of zoom range, respectable resolution, Excellent automatic white balance, Good macro coverage, although perhaps soft corners & distortion, Good ergonomics, sticky rubber on hand grip, Excellent build quality, full metal body, Timed night exposures of up to 10 minutes, Timelapse feature, Wide range of accessories available, Programmable FUNC button and initial menu, Some unique feat...
  • Cons: Slower than expected startup time, Some minor purple fringing (in the order of a pixel at worse), Slow CF write times, Limited latitude of image parameter adjustment, No record review histogram, No CF card included, AF Assist lamp not effective, can not be disabled manually, Visible noise from ISO 100 upwards, 7mp CCD cleaner, Zoom lever not proportional, motorized not mechanical, Lens slow at telephoto (F5.2), PictureProject RAW conversion crashes, Slightly clunky me...

Nikon Coolpix 8800

PC Magazine
2 September 2006
  • Conclusion: The Nikon Coolpix 8800 superzoom is actually an enthusiast camera. If you need (and are willing to pay for) sharper images than the other more consumer-oriented superzooms can deliver, this is the camera for you. But be warned, it's no speed demon.
  • Pros: Longest optical zoom (10X) of any 8MP camera. Image stabilization lets you do handheld shots more easily at extreme telephoto. Super-sharp images. Articulated LCD. Hot shoe. Shoots in RAW and TIFF modes.
  • Cons: Bulky, heavy and slow. Flash images underexposed. Small LCD.

  • Conclusion: Last year Nikon introduced the first digital camera equipped with an 8 Megapixel CCD. Its successor, the Coolpix 8800 also contains this high resolution and to start this written conclusion right here we can say it's definitely a worthy one. The focal range is enhanced from 8x to a 10x optical zoom lens, and beside that the very welcoming Vibration Reduction function is added.

  • Summary: If you want a camera with a powerful zoom, a long focal length, and extensive controls, but an SLR is too big or too expensive for you, the Coolpix 8800 makes an excellent choice. Be prepared to invest some time in mastering the controls, however.
  • Pros: Image quality, vibration reduction feature
  • Cons: Menu system

Digital Camera Magazine

  • Summary: The 8800 offers fantastic value for money and, although less flexible than a digital SLR, packs in an impressive array of features. Images are crisp and sharp throughout the focal range and the reliable Matrix metering ensures consistently accurate exposures, although there’s sometimes evidence of fringing. I bought this camera, it was ok, until about 15 months after prchase, it then packed up.... £150 to be repaired! but 13months later it has gone again.

Nikon Coolpix 8800 Review

LetsGoDigital
24 January 2013

Nikon Coolpix 8800 Review

Let's go digital
15 September 2006
