Better image quality

Howard hrt, Amazon
17 November 2014
  • Summary: I upgraded from a V1 to the V3 and it definitely is an upgrade. Better image quality, faster and easier to use. It focuses much faster with my 1Nikkor 70-300 zoom than the V1.

It would have been better to have continued the integral finder design of the ...

Captain Joe, Amazon
14 November 2014
  • Summary: I use this camera mainly for moon photography with the new CX 70-300 zoom. This gives you a focal length of over 800 mm. The results are outstanding. However my camera has had a troubled history due to my carelessness. I cracked the detachable finder by accidentally bumping it against my desk. The optical rear of the finder cracked around the eyepiece. I sent it into Nikon. Turnaround was several days. Cost $328.

Great high performance compact

Hans MPK, B&H Photo
19 October 2014
  • Excerpt: Easy to use and easy to carry around. The 20 fps speed is awesome and 18mp sensor is great. But wish sensor was bigger. Like that it comes with grip and Electronic Viewfinder. Style is reminiscent of rangefinder cameras and older SLR's with motor drive attachment. Fun camera. Lens adapter allows me to use my old slr f mount lenses.
  • Pros: Easy to Use, Fast Shutter Speed, Great Resolution, Large Clear LCD, Small / Compact

artistically made toy, for travel

Andrey, B&H Photo
16 October 2014
  • Excerpt: The camera is overpriced and slow, though, it is really nice artistically made toy. The great advantage of it, is that it allows to have the whole extreme focal range from relatively wide angle to very-very looong focal length with the respective lenses in the current Nikon 1 lenses set... Basically, the whole set is relatively light in weight and inexpensive compared to the DX or FX formats...

Miniaturized Greatness

dmbTank, Amazon
4 October 2014
  • Summary: This is my second Nikon 1 camera, and you know I would not buy a second one if I did not like the first. This V3 has a lot going for it, and many may not know that it is modular; meaning the grip and electronic view finder is an option and not required for use. This makes the camera even smaller and lighter. But, for better ergonomics and flexibility I keep mine attached. Here are some things you may want to know about this camera.

Depends on your expectations

Steve, B&H Photo
2 October 2014
  • Excerpt: I think my expectations were too high. I was hoping that the fantastic frame rate and fast focusing would take me to new heights with Birds in Flight photography. I have a D300, D5200, and D800, so it had its work cut out for it. I was disappointed. I felt the image quality was lacking (compared to my other Nikons) and the images showed more noise than I could accept. I'm sure this is due to the very small sensor.
  • Pros: Can Use Regular Nikon Len, Easy to Use, Fast Shutter Speed, Small / Compact, Use Regular 35mm Lenses, Video
  • Cons: Poor Image Quality, Poor in Low Light, Short Battery Life

Best Nikon 1 Camera with shortcomings

Landscpe Photographer, B&H Photo
28 September 2014
  • Excerpt: When you buy a 1" sensor camera you have to accept the fact that you have less dynanic range and noisy shadows if you have to lighten them up. The maximum ISO which is barely but usable for me is 800, but I typically do not go above 400 (which is bad enough) The camera itself has a lot of advanced features, very fast auto-focus and excellent tracking performance. If you can stay under 400 ISO you should be happy with the images.
  • Pros: Easy to Use, Fast Shutter Speed, Good Battery Life, Small / Compact
  • Cons: Poor in Low Light

Excellent compared to my D700

Randy, B&H Photo
15 September 2014
  • Excerpt: I purchased this camera as a supplemental travel camera to my D700 so I could leave its heavy lenses at home yet get outstanding results. I have a Panasonic DMC-ZS20 which I wanted to replace so I used both those cameras for comparisons. I was hoping that the Panasonic would be good enough so I could return the Nikon, but I was wrong. In almost all cases the Panasonic was the "also ran." this camera just might replace the D700, too, but not just yet.
  • Pros: Easy to Use, Fast Shutter Speed, Good in Low Light, Great Resolution, High Resolution, Large Clear LCD, Small / Compact
  • Cons: Cost

Fantastic …. with some minor issues

Harv, B&H Photo
12 September 2014
  • Excerpt: Just got my hands on the new V3 after a long wait …. positives …. improvement in low light, great at iso 3200 .. I normally shoot ocean sport with a D3s & 600 f4 .. the V3 with 1 Nikkor 70-300 comes scarily close to matching that performance, pretty amazing and what a technological advancement .. the movable rear screen with touch option is sensational, with the 6.7-13 lens I don't even get sand on my knees … few issues though with the viewfinder ..
  • Pros: Easy to Use, Fast Shutter Speed, Good in Low Light, Great Resolution, Large Clear LCD, Small / Compact
  • Cons: Short Battery Life, Viewfinder Not Great
