Wait for the Lytro Illum
1 May 2014
Summary: I was going to pre-order Lytro's next generation camera, "the Illum," when I saw a special offer to existing Lytro owners. If you own the original, you get [$price] off the Illum. So, ordering this before placing my pre-order made it essentially free. Unfortunately, the image is so poor that it wasn't worth keeping at all. Very low resolution and poor picture quality. I think Lightfield photography is a novelty.
Summary: Brilliant little bit of kit. Software still has its downsides (editing and so-on) but the refocusing is brilliant for quick shots or low-light. I've replaced my old point and shoot with it and I'm very satisfied.
Summary: A very cool one trick pony (I suspect that that is why the average rating is 4 stars.) The camera does what Lytro purported it to, though it took a little thought to get the resulting pics to evidence the variable focus. Also, the software download worked spotlessly. A good product to explore some of the variety in the photographic world.
Summary: Bought this camera on-line, delivery was extremely quick (next day). When it arrived I was very excited and couldn't wait to try it out. Took it out the box and attempted to turn it on, no life whatsoever though. no sign of life at all, It wouldn't respond to charger either, nor would my computer "see" it. Dutifully returned the cam to the local Futureshop. The helpful guy at the returns desk arranged for a replacement to be mailed out.
Summary: Bought one to replace use as pocket camera. Liked the concept of field camera that can focus later. In reality, the picture quality is not so good especially under low light. With up close photos the focus can be altered but not that great, with far away objects in the photo, the feature won't work or be obvious. Returned it since it doesn't serve the purpose of replacing a pocket camera at that price range.
Summary: I'm not going to go over "old ground" here and explain what is different about this camera. The pictures and description should do this for you. There has been plenty written about this camera from the tech and photographic press for the last two years. But finally, Amazon are offering this product in the UK. I've just got my hands on one and, well, I'm just gob smacked. First up - it's smaller than I imagined.
Summary: Very good shape, a nice piece of aluminum. Pics are 3D images with focus decided after the shot. I've searched this camera for a long time and I think is beautiful and probably the future in photography, but final quality of exported images is low.
