Summary: If you're buying an M9-P you know what you're getting into. It's a steep price for a camera that doesn't have any of the bells and whistles of even the cheapest entry-level DSLR. But using a Leica is unlike any digital camera experience you've ever had. These hand-made cameras feel great in your hand and offer you the closest experience to shooting with a film camera as you can get while having immediate access to digital images.
Summary: The M9/M9P was introduced in 2009. Even by today it still produces beautiful images. Albeit the price, high ISO, and low resolution are things which can be better. Overall I'm still very happy with my M9P.
Summary: Okay, I admit it, I was driven to check out the Leica digital rangefinder cameras because of the great time I've been having and the excellent photos I've been taking with their little X2 point-and-shoot! The rangefinder paradigm is admittedly not for everybody but if you ever fell in love with shooting 35mm film on a Contax or a Zeiss Ikon, the M9 might be just the perfect digital camera for you! The body is solid and the build quality is unequaled.
Summary: I never thought I'd give a Leica two stars, but that's all this camera is worth. First issue is size. Looking at the picture, it seems like you're getting something akin to an M film camera body. It's not. It's quite a bit thicker, although similar in length and width. But the thickness makes it lose that solid compact feel of an M4 (or 2 or 3). The black finish looks nice, but I didn't keep the camera long enough to see how it holds up.
Summary: I have both the M9 and the M9-P. I guess I was fooled by the Leica marketing people to buy the M9 with the lousy scratchable screen, only to be offered a year later with the M9-P, with the sapphire screen. But none the less, both cameras have a full frame sensor that can fully take advantage of most Leica M lens, which is the best glass you can use for photographs.
Summary: I've been using the M9-P now for several weeks. What empresses me the most is how easy it is to use. I have been taking pictures for over 35 years. My first camera was a Leica lllF which I traded for a Nikon and that started me down the SLR road. DSLR have become so complicated with endless menus this Leica M9-P takes you back to taking photographs not programming a camera. The pictures it produces beat any camera out of Asia hands down when combined with a Leica lens.
Summary: This is my second Leica digital rangefinder camera. I saved up to buy an M8 not too long after they were introduced only to find the camera superseded just a few months later by the M8.2 and then made entirely obsolete by the M9. More important, certainly, was that I was never overwhelmed by the picture quality from the M8. It always seemed that I obtained better results with my Nikon D300, so the M8 never became an integral part of my shooting repertoire.
