Good, but outdated, camera. Panasonic L1 is identical for less money
11 February 2013
Summary: The camera is definitely obsolete by now, but it still takes really good pictures, and is a joy to use. Note, despite what one other reviewer stated, this camera is identical to the Panasonic DMC-L1, with the exception to a SLIGHT variation in firmware. This one, basically, saves RAW files in a different format. The camera is big, bulky, not that comfortable to hold, and not a good value compared to its identical Panasonic cousin.
Summary: This is a vey nice dSLR; there are provisions for manual controls that make the camera feel like a film camera. The lens is the same as on the Leica Digilux3, and is superb. Reliability of the lens is another story. Many, including mine, have an internal part that breaks and this results in mechanically blocking the zoom to a range of 14-18. Repair efforts are futile - search the web. An almost-great camera. It is great if you are lucky.
Summary: I've owned one of these for 6 years. In addition to the Elamarit zoom - a lovely lens - I have a Zuiko telephoto zoom and a pancake 25 (50 equivalent). The camera is a joy to handle and use - although large. Controls are intuitive and made for photographers - particularly to those of us who like rangefinders. Modern cameras have better pixel counts and faster frame rates and video. Bt this camera shoots RAW files and its CMOS chip does reasonably well in low light.
Summary: I like the concern. Because I like the brand Leica and I have the lens R. I could used with Leica Digi 3. I dislike the R I could not shut yet not function. I will call Leica United States in New Jersey.
Summary: I have looked at htis camera nd the Panasonic L1 since they were made at the end of 2006. I have found myself coming back to reviews and checking prices since that time. My first SLR was a Canon AE1 and I enjoyed using it but moved to digital in 1999. I know that the Leica carries a higher price tag but I managed to get one in very nice condition for not much more than the going rate for the L1.
Summary: It is a nice camera, but does not justify the price even for the low price you pay on e-bay, My newer sony which I bought cheaper brand new takes better pictures in the low light. Leica is definitely better in day light use. Also the battery drains out so fast that you need to carry extra 1 or two with you, as without warning the low battery light starts blinking, especially if you are using the flash, even a little bit. You are paying for the name as I did.
Summary: This is the king of toy camera. I bought used one. But it's like new. Many people buy expensive and big DSLRs with rapid decision. But most of them regret buying them because they are not convenient to carry anywhere. I recommend this.
Summary: Hmmm, ' AMAZON, I dont get it. How can a Leica digital camera, ( the Digilux 3) that I bought a year ago go from $1,200 go to $3999.????? It has good ratings, but not great. It is not a collectors item. I think it is not a bad camera for 7.5 MP but my Nikon D-90, new at the same price,is the same price new, and much better, I say that mindfully as I love Leicas.. well... you'd expect a bit more from a Leica.
