great for what it is...(ie *not* a dslr)

  • Summary: I get so tired of people whining about noise on small sensor cameras. "OMG, it is noisier than my 30D/D80/etc." Hmm...what was your first clue? Perhaps that the same number of pixels are being stuffed on a sensor that is almost an order of magnitude smaller in surface area?!?!? The MP race is stupid, but so are most consumers. I would have preferred that Leicasonic made this a 7MP camera with really high dynamic range and able to shoot high ISO. But they didn't..

Very nice, but not perfect.

Diavolino, Amazon

  • Summary: I purchased a silver one a few weeks ago, and have taken it to a few trips and events and now have the following comments: 1) It is very small and light. This thing really is a point-and-shoot. The good news is that it's more portable than I expected, though one should not purchase this camera expecting it to feel hefty like an M3. 2) It's very pretty, and the fit and finish are of a high standard.

An almost perfect point-and shoot camera

W. Saumweber, Amazon
24 June 2007
  • Summary: I bought the camera because of the many manual overrides/controls it offers; also because it is the only one in the 10MP-class featuring the RAW image format. The camera indeed performs as the manufacturer promises. With one exception: the RAW output is awkward and surprisingly noisy (not what I am used to with my Nikons).

But what is it?

typejunky "typejunky", Amazon

  • Summary: Anyone buying this should be made aware, as with a lot of products today, this is basically a re-badged something else, in this case a Panasonic Lumix LX-2, a pretty good camera in it's own right. The differences are apparently largely cosmetic and badge factor is involved, hence the price difference. The Leica allegedly has different firmware, which deals with noise differently, and there is the badge factor.

User Review

  • Summary: I've had my D-Lux 3 for just over a year and seem to enjoy using it more and more. Took loads of photos at several weddings last year, very pleased with results. Just come back from the West Indies and it handled the bright light and colours very well. The lens cover can be a bit of a pain, but have got used to it now. Not having a view finder, especially when its sunny, can be awkward but other than that I'm very pleased with my camera.
  • Pros: Big screen, plenty of easy to find options
  • Cons: Lens cover is a pain and a view finder would have been nice
