GE X5 Review

2 November 2010
  • Summary: For the most part, I'm not a big fan of fixed lens cameras. Most are expensive, and, for just a few hundred more dollars, you could purchase a DSLR for vastly improved performance. So I was interested to have a chance to review the GE X5 camera, which offers a 15X zoom lens for less than $150 (if you shop around), something that's rare in a new camera.
  • Pros: Image quality is very good when conditions are right, Very low price for 15X zoom, Flash photos are really good when conditions are right, Eight resolution choices available, Inclusion of EVF is nice in low-priced model
  • Cons: Photo results are inconsistent, Most fixed lens cameras offer bigger zoom lenses, Shutter lag is a problem, Four AA batteries are handy, but add to camera's weight, Flash doesn't pop up automatically when needed, must be opened manually
