Review Summary

The 6.3 megapixel FinePix S6500fd is a SLR-inspired digital camera with 10.7x optical zoom. This camera is also able to handle high-sensitivity settings (with an ISO of 3,200), making it useful for indoor and night shots without using a flash. The camera runs on 4 AA batteries and uses xD cards as storage. The fd in the title stands for Fujifilm’s Face Detection Technology, the newest buzzword in digital camera technology. It allows the camera to lock on to a person's face and use sophisticated algorithms to optimize the camera's focusing. The S6500fd is smart enough to overcome the obstacles of multiple faces – up to a maximum of 10 – and can cope with glasses, as well.

PCAdvisor liked all the features for the advanced user, especially the optical zoom. They also liked the picture quality of the camera, noting the accurate colors, and low noise levels. ZDNet had some problems with the buttons and layout of the camera, especially the focus mode toggle and the buttons used to change the aperture. They also mentioned that, although there are plenty of perks for professional photographers, there is no way to attach an external flash, and the tripod mount is off center. They did, however, like the dual shot mode feature, which lets a user take two consecutive frames (one with flash and one without) and puts them side-by-side to make it easier to know which one to save. They also raved about the movie function, which records at VGA resolution at 30 frames per second, and the smooth, quiet optical zoom. They also mentioned the option to attach a voice memo to pictures, making it easy to caption photos without the need for pen and paper. Trusted Reviews writes that the S6500fd is a very good camera for the price, with great handling, huge creative versatility and superior picture quality. However, they note that Fuji’s S9500 camera is similarly priced with better features, making the S6500fd somewhat redundant. They also applaud the high-ISO performance of the camera, but say that the face-recognition technology is really not all that useful.
