The FujiFilm Finepix S5500 Zoom is a solid update of what was already a good digital camera, the 3 megapixel S5000. The new S5500 adds a number of improvements which although not crucial are still very welcome - these include ISO speeds of 64 and 100 (the S5000 had a slowest speed of ISO 200 which was quite noisy), a much improved movie mode, a histogram during image playback and the 4 megapixel sensor. The 5500's a pleasing little camera (bar the EVF) that rewards your efforts with nice shots. The AF is a tad slow for my liking and the lack of image stabilization means, at longer focal lengths, camera shake rears its ugly head; a tripod will be a necessary accessory in lower lighting conditions. Overall though, the 5500's a worthy successor to its predecessor, the S5000. Read more
I bought mine in 2004 and right from the start I fell inlove with it.It does everything I want it to do without problems. The battery life could be a bit better. It is now 2011 I've had it now 8 years, still no complaints at all. A very tough camera! Believe me when I say this. I put my camera through hell and back. I do home inspections, I research properties, we go on hikes (where this camera had fallin 20 feet without breakage) My small grand kids play with it. Read more
I have purchased 3 of these because they are easy to use and great for someone just getting started. I bought one for my granddaughter for her High School digital photography class. This camera also takes nice video clips. The camera is overall a nice step into digital photography, however, it is now becoming outdated. Though these shipped with a 16mb xD Card they can use the 1G xD Card. Thats a lot of photos. The xD cards are increasingly harder to find. Read more
Be prepared to lay out extra money for recharable batteries. This one hates batteries that test out at having 3/4 power left in them. Camera shuts off when it saw the batteries were partially used already. Also buy battery back pack as your going to need loads of batteries if you plan on taking plenty of pictures. Read more
As far as digital cameras go, the Fujifilm Finepix S5500 is pretty good quality, with the added bonus of having an SLR body. Anyone who has an SLR (Single Lens Reflex ) and uses one often enough, knows that this is where things get disappointing. From a digital only point of view, the camera has a pretty good zoom quality, but BEWARE, if using the zoom feature, you absolutely must use a tripod , else the camera shake is so terrible (yes, even \'if\' you feel you\'re... The 4 megapixel camera is amazing both optically with its reflex camera design and technically with many interesting details. The 10x zoom lens is a highlight with an huge focal length of 37 to 370mm (as equivalent to a 35mm analogue camera). The lens of the S5500 ist very powerful with its f2.8/f3.1 aperture and ensures excellent picture results across the entire zoom range.
