While the upgrade from the F30 to the F31fd was fairly minor, the F50fd is a completely new camera. The new 12 megapixel sensor and the image stabilization system are the most obvious changes but there is also a larger screen and some minor new features. The color is now a slightly warmer silver and Fujifilm has moved from the boxy design of the F30/F31fd to more curves and edges, something which they call 'Aero' design. It also makes the camera quite a bit slimmer. Read more

Fujifilm’s website describes the Finepix F50fd as "the pinnacle of technology in a compact camera", and there are some hi-tech features appearing in a Fujifilm F-series for the first time, notably mechanical image stabilization and automatic in-camera red eye removal. The camera also features next-generation face detection technology and the ability to shoot at up to ISO 6400, albeit at reduced resolutions for 3200 (6MP) and 6400 (3MP) sensitivities. Read more

    - Excellent resolution - I-Flash properly exposes subjects - Great portraits - Aperture and Shutter Priority modes - 2 fps Burst mode - Bargain $299 price Dislikes - LCD catches glare - High noise levels above ISO 100 - Poor dynamic range - Poor white balance accuracy - Slow processing - Poor handling Conclusion We really want to love the Fujifilm FinePix F50 fd . It has a lot going for it: 12 very effective megapixels and a bargain $299 price tag, to name a few. Read more

When the 6-megapixel FujiFilm FinePix F30 was released last year, its high ISO limit of 3200 was groundbreaking. And when we tested it in the Pop Photo Lab, it boasted full resolution capture with astounding noise and resolution results all the way up to ISO 3200. That legacy is both a curse and a blessing, however, when we tested Fuji's follow-up to the F30, the 12-megapixel, 3x zoom (35-105mm f/2.8-5.1) FinePix F50fd (street: $250). Read more

This sweet little camera replaced one I damaged by putting too much pressure (unknowingly) on the back screen. I was so heartbroken, I sourced the same camera to replace it, and was able to recover my photos, which I couldn't get via cable on the old camera or directly off the SD chip. The feature I use this for most is to take pictures of meals - the macro button is extremely easy and convenient to use, and the pictures come out well. Read more

I think this a great camera for the price. It has a nice feature that lets you take both a flash and natural light sight in succession. and shows the results of both side by side. The low light shots are pretty good. I was worried because some reviews praised it and other fault it it's ISO performance. However it seemed like the the bad reviews were not factoring in mega-pixel differences in their comparison with other cameras. Read more

I chose this over the newer F60fd because in increasing the size of the screen by about 1/4 inch Fuji reduced the control buttons to cell phone size. A lot has been made of Fuji's capitulation to the pixel wars, and arguably my Canon S40 takes photos as good, if not better, than the F50fd. However, the Canon is, by contrast, a brick, and complicated to use. Something like the difference between my old Kodak Retina Reflex and a modern SLR. Read more

If you have the money to get a compact just for indoors, overcast days, and lowlight situations, this is the camera you would want, because by virtue of all it's features, it is excellent for that; but if you need a compact for sunny days too, get a Canon SD850 IS ELPH; it is a most highly rated compact, and now that I have one, I can see why, and I am glad I got it. An extra slimline design gives this camera a great feel in your hand, and the image stablizers and good face detection will easily outface some of the competitors versions hands down.

They also offer a great set of aperture and shutter priority controls that are a super new addition.

The Fuji is probably going to make many mid range camera bugs happy, and with the inclusion of the more than average exposure controls its probably going to even appeal to some of the more advanced photographers in the group who want that extra control at their fingertips.

Its price range, being between 190 and 290 USD is going to please those who are trying to get more camera for their buck, and the 12 megapixels and the 3x optical zoom aren’t going to hurt a thing when it comes to drawing in new fans.

The camera is a bit sluggish between images and sometimes will offer you a little noise, even when set at the lower iso’s, but even for a camera that doesn’t include a full manual exposure, it’s going to be a great addition to the photographers arsenal.

F50fd offers you a 12-megapixel Super CCD imaging sensor, 3x optical 35-to-105mm f/2.8-5.1 zoom lens, and 2.7-inch 230,000-pixel LCD.

Review Summary

The Fujifilm FinePix F50fd, successor to the FinePix F30/F31 fd models, is the newest addition to the well-known brand Fuji’s F-series. It is also one of the most highly anticipated compacts. As an ultra-compact camera, the FinePix F50fd will not disappoint its users. As usual, Fujifilm keeps improving the features of its camera with each and every release. With the Fujifilm FinePix F50fd, its attractive features like the 3x optical zoom 35-to-105mm f/2.8-5.1 zoom lens, 2.7 230,000-pixel LCD screen, the 12 megapixel super CCD imaging sensor and many more. The Fujifilm FinePix F50fd is basically made of some plastic parts so that it would not seem too heavy to carry. It is known to be quite responsive especially when it comes to its face detection system, enabling the camera to spot the face quickly and accurately. With its nice slim design, the Fujifilm FinePix F50fd also has aperture and shutter exposure manual controls though it does include exposure compensation, a night mode that has an exposure time of maximum 8 seconds and a much better face detection, can find a face even when it’s in full profile, which means that it allows face detection from a wide variety of angles. Positive reviews are not only what the Fujifilm FinePix F50fd gathered, a certain user thinks that the camera can’t even produce images at any ISO that aren’t completely speckled. While others feel that the Fujifilm FinePix F50fd is a bit sluggish between shots and even at its lowest ISO, it shows minor noise. A few users dislike the fact that it doesn’t include a full-manual exposure mode. The camera startup and functions work average as far as time is concerned. Despite that, ardent fans of Fujifilm cameras like this compact, classy-looking and stylish camera, especially as it can easily fit in a pocket.
