The Casio Exilim EX-Z850 is a 8.12 Megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom lens, high speed start up and operation digital camera with a 2.5-inch TFT super-bright screen and optical viewfinder. The camera supports MPEG-4 movies at up to 640x480/30fps, with 34 Best Shot scene modes, 440-shot battery life (CIPA standard), in-camera special effects, post-shot white balance and exposure adjustments, aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure options, EX button for fast access to shooting controls and white LED light enables both still images and movies to be taken in low light conditions and acts as an AF assist light.

Features

The Casio Exilim EX-Z850 features an 8.12 megapixel image capture capability, Best Shot modes, 2.5” Super Bright LCD display, and a flash (with some extra modes) and a movie light. The Z850 also includes a 'high sensitivity' mode, with up to ISO 1600. The EX-Z850 also features both manual aperture and shutter speed priority AE options for advanced users who prefer to create customized images. The camera features a 3x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 38 to 114mm in 35mm format and an 8x digital zoom. There spot and multiple (nine) point focusing, as well as manual focusing.

Review Summary

For consumers looking for an ultracompact camera boasting a strong feature set, the Exilim Zoom EX-Z850 is certainly worth a second look. Its sleek design and tiny size make it easy to shoot onehanded, and a viewfinder make it easy to compose shots when the LCD might be bright to read, such as in bright conditions. Opinion over the usability of the EX-Z850 is a bit divided. ITP Technology found the controls to be well placed and fairly intuitive, while PC World found it to have a higher learning curve than similar cameras. Similarly, Good Gear Guide felt the manual features were rudimentary at best, while PC World found them adequate. Anti-shake DSPs and manual shutter and aperture controls give the photographer more flexibility than found on many ultracompacts, and ITP.net found the “eBay Best Shot” mode to be a nice addition to the standard complement of shooting modes. Image quality is generally clear and sharp, due to its 8.1 megapixel resolution, though Good Gear Guide complained that the sharpening algorithm was quite weak and significantly oversharpened images. Conversely, PC World felt images could actually be sharper. The camera did fare well in noise tests, producing quality images up to ISO 400.

High sensitivy mode allows even higher ISOs to be achieved. Other features include multiple autofocus options, an extensive collection of 34 pre-set shooting modes, and image stabilization. In-camera image correction is also available, allowing the user to adjust options such as sharpness, color and contrast. Opinions differ again on the camera's cosmetic appeal; Good Gear Guide found it a bit bland, while PC Magazine found it “nice looking”. While it does have a few weaknesses, amateurs looking for a camera that lets them broaden their horizons should be fairly pleased with the EX-Z850.
