Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55

PC Magazine
11 May 2005
  • Conclusion: The Z55 has the sharpest images we've seen in a camera this size, a big LCD, Casio's great menus and features, and reasonable speed. But the images produced by this camera don't quite measure up to those of of the Canon Powershot SD300.
  • Pros: Sharp, well exposed images. Tiny and lightweight, extended battery life, very good menu functions, and wide variety of preset shooting configurations.
  • Cons: LCD blacks out while image is processed. Images show fall off at the edges of the frame, flash shots unevenly illuminated.

  • Excerpt: The Casio Exilim EX-Z55 ($449) is an ultra-compact 5 Megapixel camera with a large 2.5" LCD display and class-leading battery life. A slightly cheaper model, the EX-Z50 ($399), has a 2-inch screen and slightly lower battery life. Both cameras make up Casio's entry into the crowded ultra-compact field. I'll be looking at the Z55 here -- read on to find out how it stacks up against the competition.
  • Pros: Very good photo quality (though see issues below), Ultra-thin, stylish metal body, Big LCD for a small camera (see issues below), Robust performance, Tons of scene modes, Amazing battery life, Cool playback mode features
  • Cons: Softness around edges and corners of photos; moderate barrel distortion, Redeye, LCD only "gains up" in certain Best Shot modes, most of which require a tripod; LCD resolution isn't great either, Poor low light focusing / no AF-assist lamp, Can't swap memory cards while camera is on a tripod, No memory card included; just 9.3MB of on-board memory, No video out port, Outdated movie mode, Full camera manual only on CD-ROM

  • Conclusion: The Casio Exilim EX-Z55 is a fairly solid offering. It scores highly for ease of use and I like the design. I did experience problems using the camera indoors and it tends to struggle in lowlight.
  • Pros: Design and build quality, Overall ease of use, Great menu layout, Lightening fast shutter response
  • Cons: Indoor picture quality, Very small internal memory, After sales support

Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55

PhotographyBLOG
23 April 2007
  • Summary: If you're looking for an ultra-compact camera then you should seriously consider the Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z55. Casio may not be the first name that you associate with digital cameras, but they have definitely produced a very capable camera in the EX-Z55. It offers better image quality than the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 that I have previously reviewed, although the images are still quite noisy at ISO 200 and above.

Casio EX-Z55

PhotoReview
1 October 2004
  • Summary: Casio's EX-Z55 sports a lightweight aluminium body with a large 2.5-inch colour LCD and small optical viewfinder. It comes with 9.3MB of internal memory (enough for four high-resolution images) and an SD/MMC card slot. The retracting smc Pentax 3x zoom lens is reasonably fast and the camera is supplied with a docking cradle for downloading pictures and recharging the battery. . .
  • Pros: Functionality not compromised by small size, Excellent menu system, Fast to start, Minimal shutter lag
  • Cons: No continuous shooting mode, Compression artefacts in lower quality settings, No memory card supplied [BG05]
