Beware slow shutter speed

Tenormary, buydig.com

  • Summary: I'll stick with this camera until I figure it out. I wanted something smaller to use in place of my SLR and this may be it, but not yet. Becasue I am not accustomed to this type of camera, I may be too critical. I'll let you know in another couple of months. Another $100 and I cold have an SLR.
  • Pros: Good Image Quality, Good Image Stabilization
  • Cons: Lag / Shutter Delay, Poor For Action Shots, Very Slow Shutter

  • Summary: I had my camera about 5 months, and loved it. Took great pictures. Then I had to send it in cause the card reader quit working. Under warranty so it didn't cost me anything. But gone almost 3 weeks to get it fixed. Worked great when I got it back. Then just before the warranty is up, the screen started blacking out and getting a lot of blurred pictures. So, once again sent it in.

Great camera, but enough flaws to preclude "excellent"

  • Summary: I read many reviews before purchasing this camera, so I was already aware of most of its limitations. However, there are some things that really need to be experienced firsthand to understand fully. This camera is a bridge camera, and I bought it to bridge the gap between my pocket cameras (sx130is) and my dslr (rebel xs). In that regard it is a bittersweet compromise across the board.

Excellent Photos, But Not Easy To Use

Alan Dale Daniel, Amazon

  • Summary: The Canon SX40 HS takes clear and well focused pictures. I bought the camera a few months ago as an upgrade from a 15+ year old camera which worked well but did not have an anti-shake feature. My old camera was taking blurry photos because I now shake when using a camera, and even a small shake can blur the picture. For me, this was an expensive camera. On top of the anti-shake feature, I also liked the built in power of the telephoto lens. All these features work well.

  • Summary: I liked all the features the Canon Powershot has, but was too bulky & heavy for me and wanted something smaller w/a good zoom, so ended up returning this one for a Canon Powershot SX150. I only gave this Canon an average rating, since it didn't suit me, and think it would be great for a semi-professional photographer since it has so many features, most of which I would never use. Sometimes simpler is better.

Canon Powershot SX40 HS

  • Summary: The camera looked nice. I tried it but it simply did not do what I wanted so I have returned it to the selling company. They have received it as of April 29, and I'm waiting for them to process the return. As soon as this happens, I'll be ordering a different camera. I wanted more action shots for dogs. The camera would be wonderful for scenery, etc.

Great picture quality, horrible AF

Army Dad, Amazon

  • Summary: Bought this because I needed a compact super-zoom camera. Well, the first surprise was the size. It was a bit larger than I expected. In fact, it's only slightly smaller than a regular Canon DSLR, so if you're buying this to lug around all day instead of a bulky heavy DSLR, you're going to practically carry around the same sized camera (minus a gigantic 800mm zoom lens, so you do shave off some significant lens bulk).

  • Summary: After much debate between an SLR and this camera, I decided that I didn't really need an SLR and chose the Power Shot for the high mp and zoom. The zoom is fantastic but I am not happy with the action shots this camera takes. My kids are young and are not in intensive sports yet, so I thought the Powershot would be adequate for what I needed.
