Summary: This is an absolutely great camera. It has a wonderful ultra-zoom, takes great pictures, does excellent video, is easy to use, and even has a GPS which works about as well as one can expect for a GPS. The only problem is its lens protection mechanism. I received one of these for Christmas. By mid-January the lens protector flaps were sagging and would not open all the way. I returned the camera to Amazon and got another.
Excerpt: A great camera for an all- round compact. Took a while to get used to the focussing lag - HOWEVER - Despite lowering LCD brightness and switching off GPS I am often getting only 60 exposures from a fully charged battery... I carry 2 batteries - and am getting perhaps 100 to 120 exposures... I often take3 to 400 a day I am reverting to my SX with AA batteries... VERY disappointing...
Summary: So I won't go into detail on why I chose this camera...basically the same reasons as most. I received my new camera and LOVED it. Great looking photos, easy operation, impressive features...the works. Then, a couple of weeks later, the automatic lens cover got stuck and wouldn't open or close all the way (with no abuse, I was very careful with it). I thought it must be a fluke. I returned the camera to Amazon for a replacement.
Summary: this is reviewed on many websites but the overall image quality was a big disappointment and sadly i took it to a charity shop, supposed to be 12 megapixels but my aged 6megapixel minolta left it standing, maybe it was a second or something?
Summary: I wont be buying Canon Ixus again! This week my Ixus 230HS seized up with exactly the same ailment as previously. My Ixus 230HS has seized with the lens unable to retract and an error message on the screen. The first time the camera was repaired (new lens assembly) under warranty but it is now out of warranty and I assume it will cost more to repair than it is worth.
Summary: I bought this little camera to replace my trusty old Sony DSC-V1 which I had for many years. The Sony is quite bulky and I wanted something I could slip into my pocket. The Ixus 230 is certainly dinky and with 12 megapixels (as opposed to my Sony's 5mp) I thought I would be on to a winner. I am not an avid photographer, I just use my camera on family occasions and the odd outing.
Summary: Bought an IXUS 230 last month. Can't really comment on quality of results as it had its first real "outing" last week for my son's graduation and the lens jammed fully open. I read on Wikipedia that this is a known problem. Wish I'd known that before purchase. Have e-mailed Canon re the problem. We'll see how helpful their reply is. Also don't like fact that there is no handbook. CD is no help when you're out & about!
Summary: I am so disappointed in this expensive camera but don't let me put you off. Have a look at it for yourself, it does handle very comfortably. But if you can get hold of the manual before you buy you might have a better idea as to whether this is the camera for you. It's when you print off the 270 pages of the manual that you realize there is a mammoth task to be undertaken.
