Conclusion: I have owned a Canon SX100is for many years and it is the best camera I have ever owned. It has taken a beating and been dropped, thrown, left out in the rain, and still worked as good as new until finally the LCD display began having issues. I decided it was time to retire that camera and purchased the latest model expecting it to be just as reliable and even better at taking photo's and video.
Pros: Nice features/settings, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, Poor Low-Light Performance, Short battery life, doesn't focus well when filming video
Summary: I purchased this camera for my trip to Lake Tahoe. Haven't really put to the real test yet, but the screen display is a bit grainy compared to my current camera Power Shot A590. It's a little heavier than the Power Shot A590, and doesn't have a view window like the A590. In my opinion, the PowerShot SX170 is really no better than the A590, with exception that it has 16x zoom and 16 megapixels, and the A590 has 4x zoom with 8 megapixels and takes great pictures.
Summary: The set is great. The tripod, case, and camera all work very well. However, it was missing it's included memory card and it doesn't have a cord to connect it to a computer. I had to buy both separately.
Excerpt: The Canon SX170is has a lot of handy features, seems to be sturdy, is easy to use, and will be good for the applications that most people need. I don't agree with some reviews stating that it is heavy or bulky. To the contrary, it seems reasonably compact and light weight. I would give it a "4" out of 5, were it not for the fact that it can't meet the primary needs for which I bought it; namely, to take closeup shots of nature subjects in field settings.
Pros: Easy To Use, Small / Compact
Cons: No Viewfinder, Poor Flash, Poor Image Quality
Summary: The camera isn't as good as I'd expected but it is a good camera for the price. The quality of the pictures aren't any better than my $99~ Nikon (which is much smaller). It is easy to use and the rechargeable battery is a plus (i still haven't had to charge and its been almost 2 weeks).
