"Fix for SX110 sudden power-off with good batteries"
29 October 2010
Pros: 10x optical zoom lens is a key feature, and it's an excellent camera for the $$ WHEN IT WORKS.
Cons: I had the problem others have reported with new batteries reporting as "low" and instant shut-off. I eventually figured out that it would stay on if you power it up with the rotary dial set BETWEEN the video and manual ("M") settings, and all works.
Summary: I purchased this camera after a great amount of research. It was my fourth digital camera purchase from Canon. I tested it immediately upon receipt and really liked the controls, zoom, and image quality. One month after receipt I took it on a trip to American Samoa and a number of other Pacific islands. The interior lens surfaces fogged extensively after it's first exposure to outside tropical air.
Summary: I purchased a pair of these cameras on Amazon the end of December, which were shipped from Adorama Camera. After less than 3 months of light use, both of them exhibited the "Lens error, restart camera" message. In my case, one lens is stuck all the way out and the other was partway retracted. I'm probably going to get stiffed on the repair fees for the second, which I pushed in after it got stuck and now semi-operates.
Cons: Illogical software user controls. Shutter priority does not indicate aperture achieved. Aperture priority does not indicate shutter exposure. Correction just about impossible. Shape up! What's Cannon coming to??? For da Junk-heap? + long list more...
