The Canon PowerShot SD870 IS Digital ELPH ($399) is an ultra-compact camera with a wide-angle lens, huge 3-inch LCD display, and all the bells and whistles that you'd expect on a point-and-shoot camera in 2007. The SD870 is sort of a combination of the SD750 (for the LCD) and the SD800 (for the wide-angle lens), though that's not "official". Read more

The Canon SD870 continues with the features that made the PowerShot SD800 a great camera: an excellent 28mm wide-angle lens, Face-detection autofocus, optical image stabilization, plenty of scene modes, and a few important tweaks to the overall operation of the camera. Even movie mode benefits from the wide-angle view, making personal up-close family videos quite easy and fun. The SD870's 8-megapixel sensor delivers resolution capable of delivering good quality 11x14-... Read more

The SD870 IS follows in the footsteps of some highly regarded cameras so it's understandable that Canon has chosen not to tinker too much with a successful formula. The camera's image quality is generally very good, especially considering its use of a genuinely wideangle lens. A reasonable amount of manual control for what is ostensibly a point and shoot camera means that occasional metering difficulty in tricky scenes can be compensated for, but does require the use... I purchased this camera 12/07 - I LOVE IT! I am such an inexperienced photographer that I knew a point and shoot camera was exactly what I needed and this is just so much more. The pictures are shape, the image stabalization feature is great, the zoom is the bomb, the 3' inch LCD screen is fab, I don't even miss a viewfinder. This camera is small and takes up no room, I have carried it in my handbag ever since the day I got it. My friends and folks I work with can't b... Read more

This is the best camera for its price. The powershot is amazing. It takes crisp clear pictures. It is sleek and lightweight. Best camera that I have ever owned. Period. The face recognition software is amazing. How does it do that? It also takes video. The only downside is the memory card. I had to buy a larger SD card after purchasing the powershot so I was able to take more pictures. However, Canon is amazing. They have the best customer support of any digital camer... Read more
