Review Summary

The Canon Powershot SD850 IS, a release from Canon, has a good performance for an ultra-compact camera. Being the follow-up of its previous successful models, it does share very similar features to the SD700 IS. The main difference is the upgraded 8.3 megapixels from the 6.2 megapixels and the new Digic III image processor. Unchanged are the 4x optical zoom lens, its optical IS (Image Stabilization), the TTL AiAF 9-point autofocus system, the VGA (640x480, 30fps) sized movie mode with sound and not to forget the exterior (the body) of the camera. While the new attractive features featured in the Canon Powershot SD850 IS are its famous face detection which brings out the expression on the many faces in the shot, its solid image stabilization which produces images with an accurate exposure, its in-camera red-eye removal, a new Creative Light Effect special scene mode that can alter the shape of background bright spots - into hearts, stars and comes in handy specially when shooting a night scene and not to forget its ultra-compact lens which brings out the usual corner-softness and barrel distortion. While the shots taken at ISO 80 and 100, noise levels are still low but it increases rapidly from there. The Canon Powershot SD850 IS is also considered to hold the “top of the line” spot in the “stabilized” Digital ELPH series. Some users don’t like the fact that the Canon Powershot SD850 IS has no manual exposure controls. Its on and off button is a bit awkward and it produces noisy images at ISO 1, 6000. A certain user said that it is not wise to take the camera out in humidity or wet conditions as it won’t be able to sustain itself. Performance wise, the Canon Powershot SD850 IS is great while its image quality is stunning too.
