Review Summary

Canon PowerShot SD1000 is a very good ultra compact camera supporting a lot of features. Canon PowerShot SD1000 offers 7-megapixels of resolution, a 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5-inch "PureColor" Multi-level LCD display, VGA sized movie mode as well as Canon’s new Face Detection AF/AE/FE technology. This camera is so simple that it can be used by any member of your family. Its functions are similar to the model SD600 but with extra feature, facefocus, improved digital zoom. The photo quality is good due to the 7 megapixels, and video shoot is of longer time. Canon PowerShot SD1000 is great especially for outdoor shooting. The CanonPowerShot SD1000 took 0.98 second to start up and capture its first JPEG. Following JPEGs took 1.48 seconds between shots with the flash turned off and 2.44 seconds with the flash enabled. Shutter lag measured 0.45 second in our high-contrast and 0.9 second in low-contrast situations. Continuous shooting wasn’t quite as fast as its 6MP predecessor, 1.7 frames per second regardless of image size. Canon’s face detection system is quickly and accurately detected most of the faces. However the face detection relies mostly on the subjects’ eyes, as the detection got slightly confused when one of the subjects closed his eyes. Image quality of the PowerShot SD1000 is excellent with accurate colors and plenty of sharpness. Canon keeps noise well under control from ISO 80 through ISO 200 at ISO 400 noise and ISO 800 brings significantly more noise, however images may be usable for smaller prints (4x6 inch.). It is strongly recommended staying below ISO 800 whenever possible and not using ISO 1600 at all. Nevertheless this camera is much better as compared with others in terms of ISO noise. Some complain that the battery/SD card compartment is not accessible when it is used with tripod.

Canon looked to the very first ELPH for inspiration when designing the PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH, and came up with a quintessential iteration of the icon: slim, clean-lined and fully flat. Insi…

The image quality is brilliant: accurate colors and plenty of sharpness as canon usually does; noise remains unimportant until ISO 200, but the images are useful even at ISO 800. Read more

Canon has included some nice features in its PowerShot SD1000, especially considering that it is an ultra-compact digital camera. However, some image-quality problems in low-light conditions make it tough to recommend this model at nearly $300; it's a much better value -- and compares very favorably to its similarly priced models -- if you can find it for around $100 less than the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP). Anyone looking for a good point-and-forget digicam should put the Canon Powershot SD1000 Digital ELPH high on the list. It’s not the fastest camera in the world, but it works quickly enough, even with the flash blazing away. Photo quality is of the classic Canon style, which I like very much. I’m sure zillions of shutterbugs will like it too. • Extremely compact and light • Good photo quality • Best Face Detection setting • Decent response for a camera of this... Read more

The Canon PowerShot SD1000 will instantly be usable for anyone already familiar with Canon compacts, and will only take a few minutes for everyone else to become quite comfortable as well. The SD1000's feature set, which includes 10 scene modes, special color effects and control over parameters such as ISO and white balance, is enhanced by the inclusion of Canon's latest automatic Face Detection technology. Using a no-frills approach to shooting, the SD1000 is easy to... Read more

Canon PowerShot SD1000 is a very good camera for those who are looking for ultra compact for carry. It packs a lot of features. Aperture/Shutter priority will be missed by some users; the lack of stability control is not a surprise in this price range. Some may complain about the battery/SD card compartment not being accessible when it is used with tripod, and prefer side loading instead; a minor inconvenience. Finally, I must mention the provision of LCD grid lines (... Read more

I have had this for aboout a year, and i was impressed with it from day 1. the screen is big enough, the layout of the buttons are easy to use, and the battery life is good. The only downside I see is that the zoom is only 3x, but that is a standard for any ultra compact camera these days. Read more

I received this camera for christmas and have continually been amazed. One of the best things about this camera is the amount of customization that can be achieved with chdk (google it) you can far exceed the specs of the camera (f stops to f14, iso up to 2500, 1/10000 shutter with high speed flash sync, ability to run scripts like intervelometer, motion detection etc). In summary this camera may not have all the modes of a casio but it can deliver amazing results ... Read more

This was an upgrade to an earlier Elph model which - after years of abuse and neglect - finally stopped working. I also have a digital SLR and would consider myself to be an advanced amateur photographer. Image Quality is very good. Based on other reviews, I almost didn't buy this camera. The reviews sounded like this would be a step backward, but that certainly hasn't been my experience. The quality is every bit as good as other camera's I've used - better when you c... Read more

How about the Canon PowerShot SD870 IS ? It's perfect for people who don't want to fuss around with the controls. I have an Canon PowerShot SD1000 and it takes great pictures in auto mode (but it does not have image stabilization, which would help if it did).

Just looking in the papers and on the Internet, the models that have caught my eye as possibly fulfilling my requirements are the Fuji FinePix J10, Canon PowerShot SD1000 , and Casio Exilim EX-Z750 (which I think is a couple years out of date by now, I don't know what the new model is or whether it has as good of quality).
