The Canon PowerShot S5 IS, an ultra-zoom digital camera is the upgraded version of its previous well-known model the Canon PowerShot S3. The Canon PowerShot S3 was such a success that Canon had to release a follow-up to keep the spirit of Canon fans alive. So far the Canon PowerShot S5 has not been disappointing, as a matter of fact; it is already known to be an excellent camera by having and accommodating tons of manual and automatic features, well-laid-out controls, a solid body, nice LCD display. The basic main attracting features included are Canon’s veteran optical image-stabilization technology, excellent metering and focusing systems, the signature flip-and-twist LCD display, and the set of manual and semimanual controls. Also upgraded in the Canon PowerShot S5 IS is the newly 8 megapixels sensor which increases the size of the LCD to 2.5 inches. The features are known to be very well implemented into the Canon PowerShot S5 IS. More examples of the features are a record button for movie capture, stereo microphones, a wind filter, and audio volume adjustment. The more you find out discover its features the more you will like it. Give yourself time and you will be familiarized with all its features. It does have some dislikes among its users like for example; some think that the Canon PowerShot S5 IS has low lighting abilities while some think that Canon has not broken any new ground or created anything new with the Canon PowerShot S5 IS. On a much brighter side, Canon still has many loyal fans amongst its users. The most important thing is that so far the camera has given good results for its users. CNET quoted that the PowerShot S5 IS is still a pretty good mega zoom but one that’s slowly losing ground due to the competition.

  1. Camera Test: Canon PowerShot S5 IS

It seems like every other week here at PopPhoto.com, we're hearing of a new digicam that boasts some superlative: the slimmest ultra-compact, the longest zoom, the most megapixels, fastest burst rate and so on. Then there's the recently released Canon PowerShot S5 IS ($470, street), a compact, optically image stabilized Electronic Viewfinder model that sports a respectable 12x zoom with reach from 36-432mm and an 8.3-megapixel Canon 1/2.5 inch CCD sensor, which replaces... Despite a handy function menu for the most commonly used options, the S5 IS has an overabundance of hey-let's-just-throw-it-in features that can clog menus (a wolf-howl sound effect for the self-timer? Really?). This feels indicative of the uneasy balance Canon has struck between the consumer and professional markets: For every great feature the S5 has (image stabilization, stereo microphones), another is missing (so-so optics, no RAW file support). Overall, though,... Read more

This is a must have camera for any amateur photographer. I’ve been blown away by the ease of use and professional functionality built into the camera. I have often felt that professional SLR camera’s are wasted on me but the Canon PowerShot S5 IS brings some of the power of the SLR to a cheap, feature-rich camera that is the best I’ve ever used. Canon\u2019s PowerShot S5 IS remains one of the best super-zoom digital cameras on the market. It sports a decent 12x range with optical stabilisation, a useful flip-out and twist screen, a decent degree of manual control and impressively, a flash hotshoe. Some will also prefer its use of AA batteries over proprietary and expensive Lithium Ion battery packs. The PowerShot S5 IS also handles quickly and gives you plenty of creative options from control over aperture and... Read more

This camera is amazing for what it will do for the investment made.. I have gotten many fine photos from it but did never fool with the video features... As a photographer and photo editor for many years, I can finally say that I've found a camera that suits my needs. It's sleek look appears to be a high end film camera with changeable lens. But, do not be fooled... it's digital, and better than many cameras in it's same price range. It's zoom is more than what you'll need, unless you're a private agent who needs hundreds of feet. If 10 ft. works for you, than you'll be good. The mega pixels in this are also quite high... Read more
