Summary: Camera has a message "“Lens Error. Will Shut Down Automatically. Restart Camera “ and the lens will not retract. Camera is totally non-functional after only 18 months of use. The exact problem is posted on Canon's website as a product advisory but our serial numbers are not within the range for free repair. Sent the camera to their service center and they will repair for $160. Spoke with a representative at the repair center who had no apologies or explanations.
Summary: Those cameras has a factory defect , Lens error. The lens does not close. Canon repairs some for free if the serial number starts from 29... to 41.... Others, they can fix for $150 plus shipping when they new one costs $190!!!
Summary: This camera is notorious for lens errors. Mine is broken and Canon is trying to charge me to fix it even though it is a KNOWN error. My camera is still even under warranty. DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL.
Summary: Bought this unit in Jan 2012 - it broke the first time I brought in on tour in February with the "lens error" issue. I shipped it to Canon for repairs. The first time I brought it out on a tour in Dec 2012, it broke with the same issue again! So I had it repaired at a local Canon shop, and they repaired it for free last month. WIthin the first 3 days of my next vacation, the lens error happened again.
Summary: This camera (serial # starts with 47xx) worked great for five months but now has focus issues. If I zoom out and zoom back in, the camera can no longer focus. I have to turn the camera off and then back on to get back in focus. But once I zoom out and back in, same issue; camera cannot focus and takes blurry pictures. I even updated to the latest firmware, still same issue. When it worked, it took great pictures. Seems like a design or quality issue.
Summary: I had this camera for less than 6 months and have less than 500 images taken with it, most of which have been on a tripod and I carry it either on my belt in a LowePro bag or sometimes in my pocket. I have never dropped it, banged or knocked it against anything. I'm pretty poor and it was a huge investment for me to spend this much on a camera so I baby the thing. Thing is, the LCD screen suddenly had vertical lines running through it.
Summary: Bought this camera right after it released because of the reviews and being an amateur photographer with high end dslr equipment of another brand I liked the manual control options this camera offers. I used it for a nice walk around camera and it took great pictures when it still worked. Then on a sunny cool December day 11 months and less than a 1000 pictures later I get the now famous "Lens Error" on the screen.
Summary: Truly disappointed. Opened box, took out camera and turned it on. The dreaded Lens Error message popped up. Lens would not retract after shutting off and restarting a number of times. Returned.
Summary: I was aware of a lens problem that a lot of people were having with the s100 but i thought i would be safe since canon came out with a product advisory that said it only affected certain serial numbers: The first and second digits of the camera's serial number are any number from"29" through"41." For example: "29xxxxxxxxxx", "30xxxxxxxxxx"........."41xxxxxxxxxx" So it appears the problem was fixed. My camera serial number was "47xxx...
Summary: Tested camera immediately when it arrived. Noticed some quirks but took it out for an outting anyway. Couldn't believe it, the LCD screen would consistently turn black when camera is turned on it's side for vertical shots. Tested for several days as I was on vacation, and the blacken screen appears ~ 80% of the time. Can still shoot pictures but would be shooting blindly.
