  • Summary: The functional yet compact S100 continues to refine Canon's high-end Powershot line. With a GPS, 5x wide-angle lens, 1080p HD video, and the much-lauded control wheel, does this camera have what it takes to be top dog?

  • Excerpt: I just purchased this camera because my SD500 finally broke after one too many drops. I bought it based on the following:Compact, point and shoot camera can be strapped to my chest harness for quick accessGreat image qualitySupports both fully manual and fully automatic modesSupports full HD moviesGood review by DPreview.comIt also records GPS coordinates, though I won't use that feature on long trips since it shortens the battery life.

Canon PowerShot S100 Digital Elph

PC Magazine
19 February 2012
  • Excerpt: This amazingly tiny, all-steel techno-toy is definitely for the Sharper Image crowd. Predictably, certain compromises were made to squeeze everything into its playing-card-size body. It's missing features like motion video, manual control, and a focusable diopter, and it has a downsized collapsible zoom lens and LCD viewfinder. The menus and controls may be unfamiliar and awkward at first, but even so, it's an easy shooter with a quick recycle time.

Canon PowerShot S100

CNET
17 February 2012
  • Summary: The Canon PowerShot S100 is a generally great little camera for advanced shooters who don't mind slowing down a bit from a dSLR.
  • Cons: As a trade-off for extending the zoom range to 5x the lens' aperture narrows very quickly as you zoom out. And there's no improvement over the S95's so-so performance, despite the price increase.

Canon PowerShot S100

PC Magazine
1 February 2012
  • Conclusion: The Canon PowerShot S100 is a worthy successor to our previous Editors' Choice high-end point-and-shoot camera, the PowerShot S95. It adds a longer zoom lens and GPS, and improves on the S95's image quality and performance.
  • Pros: Sharp, fast lens. Very good low-light performance. Fast recycle time. Raw shooting support.
  • Cons: Pricey. LCD is not best in class. No hot shoe.

Canon PowerShot S100 Review: Powerful and Pocket Friendly

Digital Camera Review
22 December 2011
  • Summary: While the S100 supersedes the S95 in Canon's high-end digital compact lineup and bears a strong family resemblance to the earlier camera, it represents a fairly substantial upgrade rather than a more measured progression. Continuous shooting rates are faster and full 1080 HD video is on board, along with the latest generation sensor and processor. The zoom range of the lens has been expanded, as has the native ISO sensitivity range.
  • Pros: Good still and video image quality, Good shutter lag performance, RAW/JPEG shooting options, manual controls, Compact size and light weight
  • Cons: Modest battery capacity, Cost

Canon PowerShot S100 review

What Digital Camera
7 November 2011
  • Summary: Canon's PowerShot S100 may not look all too different from its S95 predecessor, but plenty has changed for the better. The latest model is small yet powerful: its body feels robust and the wide-angle 24-120mm f/2.0-5.9 lens is impressive from a camera of such a size. If there's anything to try and make a fuss about then the lack of flash control, hit-and-miss HDR and that a little too much menu digging needed for single AF-point adjustment would be our shortlist.

Canon PowerShot S100

Camera Labs
1 November 2011
  • Summary: Canon has done all of this without compromising the core appeal of the revitalised S-series: namely packing a great deal of enthusiast-level features into a genuinely pocketable body. Interestingly Canon is the only company to have gone down this route, with main rivals Olympus and Panasonic sticking with larger form factors.
  • Pros: Smaller than any other high-end compact., Flexible 5x zoom with bright f2.0 aperture at 24mm., Support for RAW and manual exposures., 1080p and slow motion movies., Built-in GPS with optional logging.
  • Cons: Short battery life. Even shorter with GPS on., Focal ratio greatly reduces when zooming-in., No hotshoe or accessory port. No viewfinder.
