Canon PowerShot G9 Camera Review

  • Summary: The Canon PowerShot G9 is a compact digital camera that is simplistic to define, because it differs significantly from other models that feature both size and weight. To highlight the sensor, among the highest in the category, 6x zoom, which is also above average, image stabilizer, face detection, the RAW format for images and 25 scene modes. With the compact, however, shares the quality worse, that the lack of internal memory.
  • Pros: RAW; Image Stabilizer, Optical Zoom, Face Detection, Sensor
  • Cons: Internal Memory

DP Review

  • Conclusion: I should start by giving Canon a little credit for so quickly responding to at least some of the criticisms of the G7; the G9 may be a relatively minor upgrade but it does knock a few of the rough edges off its predecessor and - most importantly - brings RAW capture (and highly usable RAW capture at that) back to the G series. The new screen is nice too, and the handling performance tweaks might not be enough, but they do bring a noticeable improvement.
  • Pros: Excellent resolution and respectable edge-to-edge sharpness across the zoom range, Raw mode, Raw+JPEG option, surprisingly fast - and useful, Classic 'rangefinder' styling looks great, fit & finish superb, Marginally improved handling (better grip) and better shutter release (more distinct half-press), Capable of very good results at lower ISO settings, ISO 200-400 usable for standard sized prints (noise and NR effects are visible, however), Huge feature set, Real, us...
  • Cons: Still missing some features 'G' users could once rely on: fast lens, vari-angle screen, Although image quality is good, you'll only get the best results shooting raw, Some shadow noise visible even at ISO 80, Noise Reduction effects start to creep in and smear detail from about ISO 125, Despite improvements, the lack of a true grip makes single-handed operation difficult, ISO 800 and 1600 so noisy (and soft) it's almost pointless, ISO 3200 very low resolution, Focus s...

  • Summary: The Canon PowerShot G9 is a solid enthusiast digital camera for those who want something compact to complement a dSLR.
  • Pros: This digital camera has a cornucopia of features; it's zippy and built like a tank.
  • Cons: Relatively significant distortion at the widest angle of view; when zoomed out completely, lens intrudes into viewfinder; no optical zoom during movie capture.

  • Conclusion: Canon PowerShot G9 digital compact camera "We want RAW" we called out simultaneously when the G7 was introduced. And we did get it with the Canon PowerShot G9, including some adjustments that aren't necessarily improvements, since I certainly did not ask for more pixels. Canon did well taking a second look at the hand-fit of the camera. A few small alterations improved it tremendously. Thankfully the designers left the unique operation and shape alone.

  • Summary: And so, the problems found on the G7 have been largely fixed on the G9 – to a degree. It’s the same price as the G7 at £330, so no more expensive but it is a better camera. The lens is sharp and crisp but could still do with the faster apertures of the G6 from a few years back with its impressive F/2.0 to F/3.0 maximum aperture range.
  • Pros: Great build and handling, Fully featured spec, RAW mode, Good macro setting, Image quality, LCD
  • Cons: Higher ISO noise, Purple pixel fringing, FlexiZone AF issues, Blocky styling, Auto white balance issues.

Canon PowerShot G9

Tech2
17 June 2008
  • Excerpt: The G9 has been hyped as the compact camera that professionals like to use. The biggest reason for this is that the G9 supports a host of professional lighting and strobing equipment that are usually found in professional DSLRs, and that it has a good amount of manual options with detailed controls and an optical viewfinder. But is it the image quality as good as it is hyped to be? That's what we intend to find out.

  • Excerpt: (1 items) Canon’s G series has converted many a serious film shutterbug to digital photography. Launched in 2000 with the PowerShot G1, the sturdy G line helped establish digital photography as something more than a novelty. But judging from the latest entry, the Canon PowerShot G9, the line may have outlived its usefulness. Make no mistake—this serious-looking black brick of a camera is capable of producing great images.
  • Pros: Reliable image stabilization, Handsome chassis, RAW mode, Lots of control options, Superb image quality
  • Cons: Modest zoom range, Expensive, Near-useless optical viewfinder, Confusing control menus
