The Canon PowerShot G9 is a very powerful camera which despite some of its flaws, has been appreciated by many. The features of this digital camera are many but the main package is that it’s zippy and built like a tank. Upgraded straight from the Canon PowerShot G7 model, the Canon PowerShot G9 is the real backup to an entry-level DSLR camera. The other special feature in this is that it offers the ultimate control over image quality for those prepared to find the time refining their images post-capture. That would be what the perfectionists would want to have. The Canon PowerShot G9 is appreciated by many of its users for being different from the other compacts, in other words, its features of manual controls are sensibly implemented and best of all it is unrestricted. The Canon PowerShot G9 also has a bigger 3-inch LCD with a smaller optical viewfinder and more resolution is available from the 12.1 megapixels, features that were missing from the previous versions. Its photo quality appears to have improved in this model and it has also restored raw-format support while maintaining the same balance performance. The pictures taken with the Canon PowerShot G9 are sharp. Its colors are crisp and the photo review on the 3 inch LCD is a sight not to be missed. Mode selections available on this camera are Color Accent, Color Swap, Time Lapse, Compact, and Standard. These modes might help many as well as confuse many as users wouldn’t know which mode is more appropriate. Some tend to find the camera covered with too many buttons, applying that a person with large hands won’t be able to hold the camera properly without accidentally pressing a button. On the whole, the Canon PowerShot G9 has not disappointed its users; it has rather satisfied them in many ways.

Pros & Cons

  • could be better, the screen is good, good pictures videos, canon accesories, canon quality
  • no ergonomic grip, mild fringing, below average battery life, maybe old fashin look, nearly useless iso 800
  1. Camera Test: Canon PowerShot G9

Put the new 12.1 megapixel Canon PowerShot G9 ($499 street) next to the 10 megapixel PowerShot G7 it replaces. Now stick a piece of gaffer's tape over the model number. You'd be hard-pressed to tell them apart. The two digital cameras are virtually identical on the outside. Same optically stabilized 35-210 f/2.8-4.8 6x zoom lens (35mm equivalent), same hotshoe, similar optical viewfinder, slightly bigger 3-inch wide view LCD, but pretty close to identical all around. The G-series has been at the pinnacle of Canon's digital compact camera range for almost as long as there has been a Canon digital compact camera range. There have been a few autumns where the latest G-model did not surface, fuelling fears that Canon had decided to leave the pro-grade compact user left out in the cold. Each time, Canon answers this with a bigger and better model. Which is why the Canon PowerShot G9 is the best compact camera Canon currently makes. It... Read more

I have bought an assortment of cameras in my lifetime and I have to say that this is the best! The picture quality is superb! I took it backpacking through Europe and it didn't let me down. As soon as I got home I used the software it came with and created the greatest panoramic photos by stitching several of the photos taken under the continuous photo capture feature. The macro feature is awsome! I love taking pictures of insects and plants and they come out fantastic!... Read more

I have the camera for almost a year now. What can I say about it - comparing it to other compact and ultra-zoom cameras that I have played with (Sony H9, Panasonic FZ18, different Olympus, Nikon, Fuji and Canon older models) - and I can definitely say that this is the most pleasant camera to take pictures with which makes the picture-taking process exciting and involving experience. The build quality is a different league; every other compact camera seems like a plastic... Read more

I am a professional photographer so I know I'm biased when it comes to image quality, but this camera needs a bigger sensor for how many megapixels it's holding. Even at iso 100, the photos were still pretty noisy, and indoor photos with flash are intensely yellow regardless of what white balance or compensation you use. Even if it gets the faces the right color, it turns the background yellow if you're anywhere near a light. I get better photos out of my point and shoot... Read more
