Poorly placed video button

Camera Guy, Canon
14 November 2013
  • Conclusion: A terribly placed video start button. This is where the exposure lock button used to be on powershots, which was perfect. Now when we go to lock exposure we mistakenly start shooting video. By the time this can be shut off, you miss the shot. I must be the only one that has a problem with this button as Canon continues to include this button in the exact same place on the G16. If you can't move it, at least let the function of it be customizable.
  • Pros: excellent image quality
  • Cons: Missing features/settings, Complicated controls/menu, poor video button placement

Not There Yet

Tommyboy, B&H Photo
24 July 2013
  • Excerpt: I had an opportunity to try this camera and shot quite a few images. I love Canon camera and especially their G-series, of which I've owned three. The G1X is very similar to the rest of the G-series in build and control placement. It's a bit larger and uses (gasp) a detachable lens cap. PRO: Outstanding image quality with its large sensor. CONS: Slow, inaccurate focusing and abysmal close focusing distance. Lens is a small aperture. Pronounced lag-time when shooting.
  • Pros: Easy To Use, Good Image Quality, Good Image Stabilization, Large Clear LCD, Nice Body Color
  • Cons: Close-focusing, Focusing Accuracy, Focusing Speed, Lag / Shutter Delay

Doesn't live up to the Canon name

Duvall, Canon
13 January 2013
  • Conclusion: Well I purchased this camera to take to Hawaii while my daughter got married to do some underwater shots. I have been using Canon cameras sense the tx and Ftb came out. This camera does not have any micro capiblity at all. I shot for three weeks everyday underwater. Half my images were out of focus that right half. I was so bumbed. As well as embarrised that I purchased it.
  • Pros: Nice features/settings, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
  • Cons: has trouble with focusing inside of 10ft

User Review

Dave, Canon
24 October 2012
  • Conclusion: This camera is so slow, it takes all the enjoyment out of photography, and its macro for all reality does not exsist. I find it funny the other write that said come on its not a dslr its not going to be fast. Let me tell you most ALL point and shots beat this camera and for a lot less. It's lag and hunting for focus takes all the fun away from actually taking the pictures.
  • Pros: excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD
  • Cons: slow hunts for focus, lag

Too bad

MikeO, Canon
16 July 2012
  • Conclusion: Well, I'm sorry to say that this product has really left me wondering what's up at Canon... The image quality is good enough at lower ISOs --- BUT the camera response to menu commands, button clicks, multiple shutter exposures is soooooo slow it reminds you of the early digital cameras.. Certainly not what you would expect. Buy a G12 while they're still available. I love my Canon equipment BUT I'm going to have to find another home for this one soon.
  • Pros: Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
  • Cons: Missing features/settings, Short battery life, slow

Auto focus for close ups is louzy

12 May 2012
  • Excerpt: I bought this camera to replace my g11. I use it to take photos for my companies catalog. It is useless at close range. I really just thought my camera was broken but turns out it isnt. I have the canon s100 as well, its much smaller, and honestly takes better photos, also has a very cool slow motion movie effect that the G1x doesnt have
  • Pros: Good Image Quality
  • Cons: Limited Zoom, Poor Image Stabilization

High-end toy which fails as a people photographer's companion

Ranty, Amazon
8 April 2012
  • Summary: I have been using Canons for decades, film and digital. I have owned a G9 for years, and got this as a replacement. I wanted to love the camera, and originally did, but with use, the clutzy handling (due to poor design/target-market choices by Canon) and the limitations of the lens have me relegating the camera to third stringer. My angle is this: I used to be a working pro. I started out in large format and became a photojournalist.

So disappointing

Canon Fan, Canon
5 April 2012
  • Conclusion: I am an avid 20+ year Canon fan who only uses Canon cameras. When the G1X was announced I placed an order with B&H and was so pleased to be one of the first people to get the camera. After one month of trying the camera I was so disappointed with it I felt I had to return it. Thankfully B&H honored their policy and refunded me fully.
