Summary: I am a huge fan of Canon cameras and have been using them for many years. My Canon experience includes 5 different Canon pocket cameras, a Digital Rebel, Rebel XT, EOS 5D mark II and an EOS 7D. This camera had some negative feedback, but I thought it's a Canon, and I've never had one single bad experience with a Canon camera. Until now. I purchased this camera specifically for a vacation that included going snorkeling.
Conclusion: Bought this camera in October for snorkeling in Mexico November for its waterproof, GPS, Movie and rugged capability. Sampled pictures prior to trip and liked the simplicity and feature set. However, on first use in water (all doors are sealed with a goof-proof snap-click lock), at a depth of 3 inches, it filled up with water and became unusable. Very disappointed as I love the canon line and buy all my cameras (SLR, DSLR, Powershot) from them.
Conclusion: I've had this camera for a little over a year. It was fun while it lasted. The camera may not seal correctly thus causing the unit to be flooded with water. So much for the underwater capability. All of my cameras are Canons but I would think twice about purchasing this unit.
Summary: Canon tried to turn this into an underwater camera that also functions as a daily P&S camera, and the plan has backfired as the microphone is the weak link that has resulted in our camera barely surviving a few hours underwater. We noticed near the end of our first trip with the D20 that the microphone was shot while taking a few videos on land. The next time it went underwater, a couple of months later, it immediately leaked and broke.
Summary: I am a big Canon fan, and have bought Canon cameras since the 1970's. I had a Powershot D10 which I loved, but when I saw that the D20 was a 5x zoom rather than the D10's 3x, I decided to upgrade. The good news is that the pictures it takes are everything you would expect from a Canon camera. The bad news is that you may miss the shot you want. This camera takes 20, yes, 20 seconds to turn back on after you shut it off, or it shuts itself off.
Summary: I used the Canon D20 for 10 days before it reported a "Lens Error" and automatically shut itself down. Removing and replacing the battery did not enable the camera to successfully start. It had some problems focusing when not zoomed to minimum focal length, so perhaps that was a warning sign? It did take some very nice pictures under water and image quality (when it focused) was good. The water seals worked as advertised and the camera has a good physical design.
Summary: I bought this camera to replace my stolen D10. It is a huge step backwards. The pictures' image quality is noticeably lower than that of my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone. The videos are shaky and do not adjust to light conditions. The most disappointing element is that it is advertised as 1080p quality. When setting the video to 1080p I see no better quality than the 480p that was provided on the D10 (which made nicer videos).
