Canon PowerShot A80

PC Magazine
16 August 2005
  • Excerpt: Canon USA Inc., www.powershot.com $400 street Swiveling LCD panel with orientation sensor; excellent scene modes and easily adjustable manual controls; good overall image quality. Zoom control isn't fine enough, and zoom starts at 38 mm, which doesn't give you a very wide angle. The design is boxy, and some buttons are not well placed. Edges of dark images appear purple against white backgrounds (purple fringing) with auto settings.

Canon Powershot A80 Review

Bob Atkins

  • Conclusion: The A80 provides a pretty complete package for the beginner and advanced amateur who wants a pocket sized digital camera. The 4MP sensor is large enough to allow good 8x10 prints and the camera allows "auto everything" for the complete beginner, yet gives a full range of semi-automatic and fully manual modes for those who want complete control over their image.

Photoxels

  • Summary: This Canon PowerShot A80 Review is based on a production model. All sample images are unretouched, except where specified. The Canon PowerShot A80 is an attractive, compact and affordable digital camera perfect for an aspiring photographer. It improves upon the hugely popular PowerShot A70 with a larger image sensor, 4 megapixels resolution, and a very handy swivel LCD. It has the image quality Canon is famous for, its 4.0 megapixels resolution allows 11x14 in.

Expert Review

Dc Resource
12 October 2003
  • Excerpt: One of the most popular cameras of 2003 has been the Canon PowerShot A70 (see our review). It's received positive reviews from camera review sites (like this one) and users alike. Due to its popularity, finding an A70 proved difficult for many consumers, who would show up at Best Buy to find them out of stock. What made the A70 so desirable? In my opinion, it's because Canon "gets it".
  • Pros: Very good photo quality, aside from issues discussed; great detail, color, low noise, Full manual controls, Can save favorite settings to mode dial, Flip-out, rotating LCD display, Very solid, easy to hold body, AF illuminator, Supports add-on lenses, underwater case, One of the best software bundles out there, Great value
  • Cons: Blown highlights in some images, Too much purple fringing, even at higher F-numbers, Plastic tripod mount, No rechargeable batteries included, Movie mode is outdated

Digital Camera: Canon Powershot A80

Tom's Guide
4 September 2003
  • Summary: The A80 is for all intents and purposes the ideal compact camera. It is: But for it to have been perfect, we would have liked it to have been just a little more compact and lighter and with a bigger LCD screen. It could have also used a 640 x 480 pixel video mode and a zoom lens that could capture greater brightness. Also, the automatic white balance needs attention, even though it is more sensitive than that of the A70.

  • Conclusion: It is without a doubt that Canon has yet again managed to churn out another value for money winner with its Canon Powershot A80. We simply love its automatic protective shutter, saying goodbye to the entangling times we had with lens cap straps. With the option for attaching add-on lenses and filters, the Canon Powershot A80 will go down quite well with advanced users looking for ways to expand the functionality of their camera.
