Excerpt: Image quality and picture modes are awesome - shutter lag is a bit annoying. However video quality is good - just cannot be used using zoom - very annoying. Battery life si good since it uses AA batteries - you probably want to use a fast speed 4GB card else the video will chew up the memory so fast it'll make your head spin.
Excerpt: The Canon PowerShot A640 is a small but powerful little digital camera, which is so easy to use it's basic features. There are tiny pictures on the camera which tell you where everything is so you do not have to memorize what all the gadgets are. My child has no problem taking photos with this camera. Viewing previously taken photos is just a switch away.
Excerpt: Guys i can give you all one guarantee that you can very well take this camera to the middle of the waterfall at niagara. Yes you can take Canon Power Shot to capture those very lovely, breathtaking, nostalgic and memorable movements. I am not saying that the camera will not give away. We took the snaps right in middle of the nigara waterfall and the camera just gave way.
Summary: I am not an expert in cameras for a sophisticated review. I just report two problems with my A640 after a couple years of very light use. The camera is now dead -- not responding to on/off after my recent battery change. The Wolf Camera service wants 130 flat rate for fixing the problem, for I am out of warranty. On several occasions my photos have been spoiled by an easily movable round selector on the top of the camera (portrait, far objects, etc).
Summary: I really love this camera. It takes amazing photos and the batteries last forever. I've only changed the batteries twice and I've had this camera for 9 months. I use it very often! But the lense cover is flimsy and broke the first month just from opening and closing. And now there are lines in the pictures! I have to try to return it already and I take extremely good care of it so there is no reason that it should already be broken!
Summary: Oceanmania wrote: "Blurry photos - Canon did not include image stabilization in this camera & it clearly shows. Many of my pictures are blurry, fuzzy & look out of focus" The same happend to me after paid over 300dls. I got this!!!!. Have you seen the sony camera comercial about the face detection features? that is exactly what happen to me, I shot the pic to my subject, and the subject is blurry. But ooh!!
Summary: I think for most folks, most of the time, this will be a fine camera. But for me, there was one big show-stopper: a minimum aperture of f8. This means you can take good portraits and vacation shots with it, but doesn't allow anything semi-serious. You won't get very good depth of field. For a nature photographer, this won't work! I was looking for a lightweight, high capability digital that I could use for mountaineering and rock climbing.
Summary: This looks like a good compact digital camera, but I raninto one big show stopper: The minimum aperture is an f8. For the outdoor photography I do, this won't work--no gooddepth of field. I think for most folks, most of the time, this will be afine camera. It should shoot fine portraits and vacationshots. It won't work for a semi-serious photographer. Summary: If you're looking primarily for an outside-use camera, then this one is very good, but if you take a lot of indoor shots, then you may want to look elsewhere. Not to be too negative, overall I'm pleased with the picture quality of the camera, but here are a few things I found to be both good, and not so good, about the A640. Good-to-great is the high quality outdoor pictures it takes. But the not so good is its built-in flash capability.
Summary: Prior to buying the A640, my wife & I had been long time users of the Sony Mavica. The A640 was our first new camera purchase in quite some time, so we had expected a product advanced well beyond what we had. In many respects, our expectations were met. The A640 takes excellent pictures at distance and in less lighting than the Mavica required. At distance, the high resolution photos are quite crisp and well detailed. The light weight of the camera is also convenient.
