Summary: I bought this camera when my beloved digital ELPH came down with the fatal lens error. This camera is the one that came up as the newest version of that ELPH. There is no comparison between the two cameras. This version doesn't have a "kids and pets" setting, so it's darn near impossible to get a decent action shot. A while back I discovered I couldn't get the flash to fire, even when you attempt to "force" it. It just doesn't flash anymore.
Summary: I had good expectations when I bought the Canon A4000 six months ago. There were nice features, such as an 8X optical zoom, and a small size, for a decent price. I've shot perhaps 300 images since purchase, a number of them with flash. And now -- on a vacation abroad -- the flash stopped working, ruining several important shots and preventing me from taking others. No, my camera wasn't knocked around or misused. The battery is charged.
Summary: We bought these cameras for warehouse employees, however they only last a month or less because any slight knock while the lens is out and it damages the flawed zoom mechanism. Once the lens error happens the camera is worthless. Avoid like the plague.
Summary: I am obsessed with my cameras. I can go somewhere for a day and come home with 700 shots and I love it. I had a Canon camera prior to buying this one and loved it so this is not a diss on Canon. This camera is the worst camera I've ever held in my hand and that includes the old Polaroid instant camera I used to have as a kid. The flash turns itself off regularly. The auto flash simply cannot read when it's suppose to work IF it decides to stay on.
Summary: the lens would not close. called customer service at Canon. Had to send it in. Next day get an email " they do not repair this camera". Why did I waste my money to send it in? Located my receipt and it is still in warranty but now i am told I have to SNAIL MIAL THE RECEIPT; they do not accept email to see if they WILL warranty it. It has a 1 year warranty. DO NOT BUY CANONHORRID CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Summary: I have owned Nikons and Panasonic Lumix cameras that have been so simple to use. This camera has been nothing but frustration. The biggest issue is that the camera often does not take the picture even though it appears that it did. Secondly the flash often refuses to go off also resulting in no picture being taken. I have missed so many pictures. This camera is also very slow but that is not all that surprising given the price.
Conclusion: 2 weeks after using this camera, a piece of debri some how got behind the lens and can not be removed. The flash burnt out after 5 months of use. NOT warrantied. Warranty is only 90 days. the pictures where awesome but the Price and the inferior construction for a Canon product,, I will warn anyone not to buy. The flash burning out was my turning point to flag this camera as well as the entire power shot series there all made the same!
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
