Excerpt: Just got the camera and have not had a real good opportunity to put it through its paces. Out of what I have done, I am very pleased with the low light capabilities. It is a very nice design, very compact and sleek. The 3" screen is very good and the controls are simple. My only issue thus far is the use of micro sd only, but I guess in order to get the body so small, some concessions had to be made. This was purchased as a travel/vacation camera, and I think it...
Summary: I have been a Canon fan for years, and was excited to buy this point and shoot (my 3rd from this brand). I was especially looking forward to using the new HS technology. The bulkiness isn't a problem (for, make no mistake, this camera is not 'sleek'). My biggest disappointment is about the picture quality/clarity.
Amazing video quality. Inconsistent picture quality. Nice features but needs more buttons.

Summary: Pros: Amazing 1080p video quality. Nice list of features and special modes for pics/video. 24mm wide & F/2 lens for $150 is amazing. Cons: Very inconsistent image quality. Sometimes perfect shots, other times very grainy, soft images even in situations it should be able to handle. I personally want more physical buttons instead of a touchscreen that could be more sensitive than it is. Makes getting around the menus easier.
Summary: This is my 8th digital camera. In the last 6 years, I have bought and sold so many digital cameras as I always want the latest model and features. I usually use the camera for a maximum of 1 year and then sell it and buy a new one. The only camera that I used for 3 years was Sony DSC P 200. I sold that bought this Canon camera as I wanted to try Canon for first time. Unfortunately I did not like it much as the photo quality was poorer than even my old Sony DSC P200.
Summary: I really wish I had not bought this camera. I've been a fan of the SD line forever it seems. My last one was an SD 1000 and I loved it! So I "upgraded" to the 500HS and regret it very much. The image quality is good - not great but good. The wide angle distorts but is useful, and the video quality is astounding. The pre-programmed modes are really cool, especially the false tilt-shift and low light modes. I love the aperture and shutter value control!
Summary: I bought this camera for a gift; I'd had excellent success with an earlier Elph so thought this one would serve the gift recipient in the same way. Problem was, she could never get it to work right --- the touch screen, both when composing shots and after taking them, showed dark, washed-out images and nothing she or I did remedied the problem.
"Good Canon quality! Try out Touch Screen before buying"

Pros: Since I have been a Canon owner from G-1 to G-11 plus S95, I love their quality and low learning curve because of my experience with their cameras. 500HS has nice Wide Angle and 105mm for portraits.
Cons: I had 2 friends that loved their Canon 300HS. Thought I would step up but 500HS is much heavier. At age 81, I do not have enough memory ability for Touch Screen. I can see why price dropped 33% in days. I am giving mine to a favored nephew.
