The newly-enhanced Auto mode works well, recognising not just the difference between people, landscapes and close-ups, but also the lighting conditions, adjusting the exposure and flash accordingly. The 720p HD movies are recorded at a relatively high bit-rate of around 24Mbit/s and are certainly a step-up from standard VGA modes, but we found the image processing somewhat restrained with softer, more muted-looking footage compared to many rivals. • Very slim and stylish compact., HD movies at 720p and HDMI port., Good Auto with Scene Detection., Great screen with optional viewfinder.
    • Average 3x zoom range and no 28mm., Soft corners at wider focal lengths., No optical zoom during movies., Pointlessly slow 0.8fps ‘burst’ rate.

Conclusion . I hand-picked the Canon SD780 IS from the range of Spring 2009 digital cameras, hoping it would be a good performer, as I expect its appearance alone to make it a great seller. We've even see other sites give it a positive review. Though we really like the way the camera works, and at least two of us had it on our short list as our next pocket camera, the fact that it can't exceed the capabilities of the two-year-old 7.1-megapixel Canon SD1000 scuttled our... One of the latest in Canon's highly successful, stylish IXUS range, the IXUS 100 IS is strikingly slim and available in either silver, black, red or gold. The model doesn't scrimp on specification, cramming in a 12.1MP sensor and 3x optical zoom, complete with optical image stabilisation, into its slim profile. The model also incorporates full HD movie capture, at a resolution of 1280x720 and 30fps, and also offers an HDMI output connector. Read more

Of the dozens of cameras we’ve seen launch this spring, the $279 Canon PowerShot SD780 IS, a pint-size point-and-shoot, stands out with one of the sleekest designs. You also get accurate colors, HD video recording, an Intelligent Auto mode, fast face detection, and a neat LCD with a built-in accelerometer. More advanced photographers will get fed up with its weak low-light and Macro performance, but casual shooters will appreciate its quality and love its portability. Read more

  1. Excellent point and shoot, numerous possibilities with CHDK

First, I'd like to make it clear I'm not an excellent photographer. I've owned two of these cameras in the last couple years, and I've used them more than anything else I've ever had hands on. Second, I've used them frequently with CHDK, but primarily with the normal firmware and thus featureset. I spent most of the last two years with a SD780 in my pocket, and I'd do the same again if it weren't for this camera's single biggest flaw. (more on that later. Heheh.) Ok. Read more or see product

This was a last minute purchase before taking an international trip for a friend's wedding. I did a brief web search and chose the powershot. I was able to use it out of the box without spending any time flipping through the manual. I've only used it for about a week, but so far the pictures look great. I've taken indoor, outdoor (both in good and poor light), and a few action shots. There does seem to be a bit of shutter lag. Read more

I bought this camera for my wife and she has very limited (none) experience with digital cameras. With this camera on Auto she takes pictures like a pro. I could not have bought her a camera that would have made her any happier. This is a perfect camera for vacations and outdoor activities as it takes up very little space in your purse for pocket yet is as good as a larger camera. Read more

I bought this camera for Christmas to take family photos and I am very glad I did. Up until then I always had Nikon cameras and was always disappointed with their performance. What I wanted most of all is to be able to take night time pictures that are clean and crisp. I would deffinitely recommend this camera. It is also a great little camera to take along for snapshots. I always have it on me. You never know when you might get a great shot. Read more
