Canon 40D takes great photos, until it stops...

  • Excerpt: I received this as a wedding present that I picked out. I was SO excited about it, after reading reviews and seeing the photos that other people had taken with theirs. It was also the most expensive thing I'd ever owned, including my car. First of all, until it quit working (hopefully it will work again soon, but we'll get there), I did get some GREAT photos with it. I'm not a professional photographer, but I can take a pretty great photo now and then.

Less Quality than Nikon D90

PHOTOTECHFORYOU, B&H Photo
24 January 2009
  • Summary: I bought this camera after hearing that this camera is great on low light situation. Yes it is true, but when I compared it with Nikon D90, Nikon wins. Ease of use, nikon has more ergonomic buttons, for instance on Nikons you have instant access to ISO or white balance. With Canon 20D, 30D and 40D you need to do it in 3 steps. First you turn on the backlight, 2nd you need to press the ISO button then 3rd you rotate the value dial. Very inconvenient.

  • Summary: I use this camera as a professional, it has good properties, I like the shutter speed but I would like a bigger image sensor. Also it has a life view sistem but you most to be carefull when use it whit day light. My first camera is a 5D, and this one it´s a backup camera. I apoligize for my English.
  • Pros: Easy To Use, Fast Shutter Speed, Quiet, Small Lag Time, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Sensor size

Great image quality, but some issues

Paul Robertson, B&H Photo
29 August 2008
  • Summary: I use this camera for a variety of things: - sports/action - weddings (just casual -- I'm not a wedding photographer) - portraits - wildlife - landscape Things I like: - Speed - I very rarely fill up the buffer and have to wait to take a photo (shooting full res raw). - Size - I have small-medium size hands, but the latest Rebel series bodies all feel very small in my hands (even though this was an upgrade from a Digital Rebel). This camera feels very nice in my hands.
  • Pros: Comfortable Controls, FAST AF, Quick start up, Small Lag Time, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Overexposes sometimes, Small viewfinder

Not the sharpest, but nice machine

Mexshooter, B&H Photo
11 August 2008
  • Summary: I know that as a professional I shouldn't expect that much from a Amateur machine. Well you shouldn't either if you are considering this camera as a money saving option. The biggest con I've found is image quality when taking the camera to its limits in details. You will feel something is missing on picture sharpness. However, that will be true under very strict evaluation, I must say. Now the good news: SELF CLEANING system is a gift from the Gods.
  • Pros: Bright LCD, Comfortable Controls, Long Lasting Battery, Quiet, Self Cleaning Sensor, Small Lag Time, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Lack of sharpness

  • Summary: Excellent, though bulky camera with great range of features. Serious photographers will love it. Wannabees, too. Beware of durability issues.
  • Pros: Lots of features, great image quality "real feel"
  • Cons: Lots of features, bulky and heavy. Failed after 6 months use.
