DP Review
6 July 2008
  • Conclusion: Seven years since the EOS D30, the sixth incarnation of that camera displays all of the advantages of a progressive evolution in both features and quality. With each step up the evolutionary ladder to the EOS 40D Canon has demonstrated improvements in image quality, performance, usability and features.
  • Pros: Excellent resolution, good per-pixel sharpness, Good tonal response, dynamic range extended compared to competition, EOS 30D, Highlight tone priority option delivers even more dynamic range with very little downside, Trademark Canon CMOS noise free images, remain detailed even at high sensitivities, New 'High ISO speed noise reduction' option removes any trace of chroma noise, film grain like, Confidence to use camera at high sensitivities (ISO 1600, 3200), A/D conver...
  • Cons: Average automatic white balance performance, still very poor under incandescent light, Picture Style tone curve not indicated in camera menu (contrast is an offset, not absolute), Continuous shooting rate slower than specified, 6 fps @ 1/500 sec, 6.3 fps @ 1/4000 sec, No contrast detect AF in Live View, Flash must be up for AF assist lamp (although AF is good even in low light), Virtually pointless print button, should be customizable 'FUNC' button, No mass storage US...

  • Conclusion: Canon EOS 40D digital SLR camera The seven models, from EOS D30 to the 40D, have changed drastically. The image sensor and processor took huge steps forwards and also the DSLR camera itself improved a lot. Can you still imagine how happy a 1.8-inch monitor on the back of a camera made you? The difference with today's cameras is evident and the EOS 40D is a true example of where we stand now and how the technique has advanced.

Review: Canon EOS 40D DSLR

Macworld
20 March 2008
  • Excerpt: (1 items) Canon’s EOS 40D digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera is the follow-up to the EOS 30D ( ) released two years ago. The 40D sits squarely in the middle of a DSLR market that spans everything from $500 entry-level models to $7,000 pro-level DSLRs. The 40D has a 10.1-megapixel sensor, up from the 30D’s 8.2 megapixels. The 40D also has the same sensor cleaning mechanism used in the EOS Digital Rebel XTi ( ) and a Digic III image processor.
  • Pros: Great interface with re-defined menu structure, Good live view implementation, Nice customization features, Custom modes, Image quality
  • Cons: Lacks some advanced features and customization options, Inconvenient power switch, Limited auto-bracketing

Canon EOS 40D

Camera Labs
1 September 2007
  • Summary: Canon’s EOS 40D arrived almost like clockwork, 18 months after its predecessor. This came as no surprise since Canon’s updated this particular product line at predictable intervals, but the burning question was how much of an upgrade it would be. The earlier EOS 30D may have been a case of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, but by resting on its laurels for a product generation, Canon lost significant market share to Nikon.
  • Pros: Superb handling and 6.5fps shooting., Great build & improved weatherproofing., Live View and PC remote control., Effective anti-dust during our test period.
  • Cons: Resolution not a big step-up., Default settings benefit from sharpening., Screen doesn’t have VGA resolution., No HDMI port and tough rivals.
