There's no mistaking the Canon EOS 40D for one of the zillions of point-and-shoots or entry-level D-SLRs like the Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XT. Check out our review for more! Read more

    • Good 10MP images; amazing 6.5 fps burst mode; large 3-inch LCD

Canon’s EOS 40D arrived almost like clockwork, 18 months after its predecessor. This came as no surprise since Canon’s updated this particular product line at predictable intervals, but the burning question was how much of an upgrade it would be. The earlier EOS 30D may have been a case of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, but by resting on its laurels for a product generation, Canon lost significant market share to Nikon. Read more

    • Resolution not a big step-up., Default settings benefit from sharpening., Screen doesn’t have VGA resolution., No HDMI port and tough rivals.

The new Canon 40D offers a very mature set of features in a camera that's priced lower than its predecessors. It also offers as much value and image quality as competing designs that are hundreds of dollars more. Canon's pro SLR designs have always been conservative, and they didn't try to leap-frog the market with a higher resolution sensor; instead they stuck to a 10-megapixel sensor size that would deliver the quality that Canon fans are used to. This is a proper upgrade to the 20D, whereas the 30D felt more of a stop-gap, and as a result the camera has caught up with the times. It's very well made, has some interesting and useful new features and should be popular with previous Canon owners and those wishing to upgrade from either the 400D or another entry-level camera. I had wanted this camera for a long time and I finally bought one earlier this year. It is an awesome camera. It performs best at 100 iso, but needs a bit of noise reduction after that. Great camera for sports and action with the 6.5fps. This would be a good buy for someone wantin to upgrade bodies for a low price. Read more or see product

I purchased the 40D as an upgrade from my 20D. As expected Canon put out yet another great SLR. The image quality is excellent and there is a noticeable difference in terms of AF speed (when compared to my 20D). The large 3 inch LCD screen is a nice bonus but I just wish the resolution was a bit better. The improved burst shot is another great plus. Paired with the 28-135mm IS you have yourself a decent combo. Highly recommended. Read more

Overall this camera is of solid build, and provides many features to keep the average (and some above average) photographers happy. While it might not have a full frame sensor like the Pro models, it provides enough features and options to allow even a professional photographer to do what they need to do. It's fast, and accurate, and while it does not feature video recording, it DOES offer a higher FPS than the newer cameras such as the T1i / T2i, etc. Read more

Use of a Pop-up Shade helps with the LCD especially in the sun. Bought this after I lost the 20d. Find the 40d a nice step above my 30d and have now moved that to the back-up position. Resolution very good and, although considered the 50d, decided to go with the 40d instead. Read more

Review Summary

The new Canon EOS40D redefines photography as real art. Also known as the next generation of digital SLR photography, this highly-anticipated Canon EOS40D features proofs of advance technology in the form of its new features like Live View shooting, advanced DIGIC III image processor, an advance autofocus sensor, a 3" LCD and a 6.5 fps continuous shooting capability. According to the CNET review, Canon added dust- and weatherproofing on the CF slot, the buttons, and all connection points, and it implemented the same integrated sensor-cleaning system that’s in the Mark III series. The latter vibrates the sensor to dislodge dust during start-up and shut-down (pressing the shutter cancels cleaning during start-up), and if that doesn’t work, a Dust Delete Data option enables the camera to analyze and remember where it senses dust and algorithmically remove it from photos. There are different modes available which makes it more like a camera for pros. The Canon EOS40D is easy to learn how it functions and its modes are both automatic and manual. And also with that feature, it allows to the photographers an amazing capability to capture photographs in various conditions. It’s not considered a boring camera but a challenging one. The Canon EOS40D would come of use to people who love to be involved in digital photography. It’s also great in providing a wide range of control. With its advanced auto-focus system makes it easier in capturing moving objects a lot easier. It also features a full-time ISO in the viewfinder. Apart from its special features, it’s also known to be much more weather durable than its previous version. While some might find there’s nothing new in this camera, others seem to just ‘click’ with it. The devoted Canon fans will love this camera while others risk nothing in trying.
