The draw of this camera for many will be the high megapixel count at an affordable price, the Canon DIGIC software and the years of Canon digital experience built into the unit. Having recently tested some of the newer entrants into the field this experience should not be underestimated. But what might the attraction be for those who see the Rebel as a more of an amateur DSLR and not up to snuff for their photography? Read more

It's easy to miss much of what's improved on the Canon Rebel XTi, mostly because it seems so cosmetically similar to the Rebel XT. But the real improvements are internal. Getting to 10 megapixels while maintaining that industry-leading image quality was quite an achievement, and it's the factor that keeps the Rebel XTi worthy of the word "compelling." Regardless of what you think of the grip or other elements, there's no question that the Rebel XTi is the one you want... Read more

There's no doubt that the 400D will be just as successful as the 350D, if not more so. Canon has added some really useful features and made a camera different enough to warrant an upgrade, without changing the basic functionality of previous models. Different but familiar is always a winning formula, and we doubt Canon will be knocked off the top spot by the young pretenders just yet. Read more

    • Compact, build quality, dust reduction, improved AF, good Raw file quality.
    • Chroma noise especially in JPEGs, position of DoF preview button, limited purchase of right-hand grip.

The Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi is a much more significant upgrade than anyone expected. Many believed it would simply follow in the same footsteps as the EOS 30D by sporting a bigger screen and Picture Styles, but keeping the same sensor as its predecessor. But while we did get the screen and Picture Styles, it was a surprise to also find a higher resolution sensor and a new active dust removal system. Read more

    • Low noise, high quality images, Wide range of anti-dust options, Nine-point AF from EOS 30D, Great value for money
    • Resolution not a big step-up from 350D / XT, Anti-dust not 100% infallible, No anti-shake in standard kit, Sony Alpha A100 a tough rival

Priced at $899, including an 18-55mm lens, the XTi is right in line with its chief competitors, the Sony Alpha DSLR A100K ( ) and the Nikon D80 ( ). At first glance, it may be difficult to notice a difference between the XTi and the XT. The camera’s body has undergone a lot of subtle molding changes, and you may or may not think that these make a difference in the feel and handling of the camera. Read more

Summary of changes (compared to the EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT) Dust reduction ('EOS Integrated Cleaning System') The headlines features for the EOS 400D are its ten megapixel sensor, nine-point AF sensor (from the EOS 30D) and new 'EOS Integrated Cleaning System'. I'm sure there are many Olympus E-series owners having a chuckle at this moment, through the many years of 'there is no dust problem' emanating from Canon owners to see Canon now admit (but also address) the... Just three years ago Canon started a revolution with the 6.3MP EOS Digital Rebel -- the first digital SLR to sell for less than $1,000 with lens. That revolution has been such a wild success that the third-generation Reb, the XTi, arrives with 10.1MP, loads of high-end features, and an even lower price -- and still finds itself in a battle with four other manufacturers for that same piece of turf. I am sure my camera will be a wonderful investement when I get it fixed. I bought the camera at the beginning of June as a gift to myself for my birthday. I didn't open the box until my husband came home from deployment and was going to help me use it. I have a problem with the CF chip and formatting the camera. The Canon EOS 400D, a highly recommended camera, is an entry level-priced DSLR with professional level image quality and capabilities. This time Canon lives up to its standard with its Digital Rebel XTi. This Canon EOS 400D is easy enough for a beginner to use and at the same time, its good enough to be used by professional photographers. The Canon EOS 400D like its predecessor sports a bigger screen and Picture Styles, but still keeps the same sensor as its predecessor. There are also a higher resolution sensor and a new active dust removal system. A certain reviewer was genuinely happy that he could take pictures with this camera without having to make his young kids stay still to strike a pose. The same is expressed by another user. Coming back to this Canon, the Canon EOS 400D is a bit compact and lightweight by weighting approximately 4 ounces more than its 17.1-ounce predecessor, unusually fast and responsive, much more intelligently designed with shooting-friendly layout. Known to be well-balanced, thanks to its small, exceptionally light kit lens that are attached to the larger and heavier 16mm-to-35mm (25.6mm-to-56mm equivalent) lens. The huge main LCD can be used as a read-in of the methods of monitoring the settings. Features that are displayed there on the LCD cannot be seen in the viewfinder. Features like the ISO speed, white balance, battery level, and other useful settings. According to CNET, most amateurs will find all the essentials: a handful of manual, semimanual, and automatic exposure modes; user-selectable nine-point autofocus, and AI Servo autofocus for moving subjects; and simultaneous raw-plus-JPEG capture. The only known lacking feature in this camera is the spot meter as it supplies only evaluative, center-weighted average, and partial center-weighted metering. Aside from that, it is a great camera to be used.
