Excerpt: I bought this camera for times when I didn't want to carry around my heavier Canon digital SLR. It's a great camera that allows you to shoot nice pictures in Auto mode or have some fun and be a little more creative in other modes. I really like the image stabilization feature -- I used it to great effect when I was shooting pictures at a school musical. I was able to turn off the flash and still take some really great pics without a tripod.
Excerpt: The Canon Power SD 990 IS (Image Stabilizer) (Digitial ELPH) is "too easy" to operate. This sleek, brushed aluminium, chrome, and lightweight camera operates with a lithium battery so you can keep a charge for a longer period of time. If you are not real "camera savvy" place your camera on "Auto" and let it make all the decisions for you.
Summary: I am very fond of Canon products, however I think there is something missing with this camera, you can take great shots with daylight but unfortunately you have to be very patient when waiting the camera to autofocus at night. IA mode is also quite dumb when selecting the subject to focus. By the way, its last generation processor could be better. Recording movies is great. I don't know why it has to be *.MOV but it's not a big deal after all.
Summary: This camera showed up in excellent condition & arrived sooner than expected. I bought this camera for scuba diving. This requires an underwater housing, but takes AMAZING pictures out of the box. Fantastic pictures in/out of the water!!! Great purchase.
Summary: Right to the point. I have used many point and shoot cameras over the years. Not all of them were Canon cameras. I've purchased the Canon 50D camera but wanted a smaller camera to carry around. I choose the Canon SD990 IS, 14.7 MP camera. After taking several hundred pictures with this camera I can say the picture quality is outstanding not to mention the camera's construction, also. I've taken pictures and printed them to 13" x 19" size with again, outstanding results.
Summary: i love this camera. I have an SLR and always end up using this camera to take my pics anyway. Im about to sell my SLR and just stick with this camera. The colors that this camera catches is beautiful and vivid. ive been very happy with this camera.
Summary: Horrible CCD blooming problem. Sent the camera back to Canon twice for this problem. They claimed it was inherent in CCD cameras. That is true to a degree but since I have 4 other SD models as a basis for comparison the problem is ten fold in this model. I think that is why they dropped the 14.7 chip in their line.
Summary: This camera is truely outstanding. It is the third ELPH series camera I have owned, so I know the basic psckage well. However, the increased megapixels to 14.7 make this model more flexible than those that came before. I have also, on Ebay, purchased aftermarket wide angle and telephoto lenses, therefor further increasing versatility. To top things off, I also purchased, on Ebay, a SanDisk Extreme 32GB SDHC memory card, for huge capacity and fast downloading.
