Excerpt: (1 items) As a fan of Canon’s Digital Elph cameras, I was a bit disappointed by the current flagship model of the series, the 14.7-megapixel PowerShot SD990 IS . My disappointment lies mostly with the build quality of the PowerShot SD990 IS; it produces image quality that’s among the best we’ve seen of cameras of a similar ilk. I expect a camera priced at around $400 to feel solid.
Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS / PowerShot SD990 IS Digital ELPH
1 August 2009
Summary: The camera’s unique grip shape, which resembles a squashed figure-eight from the side, looks and feels a little odd at first, but before long offers a comfortable and secure grip. And like all of Canon’s higher-end compacts, the build quality and finish are excellent.
The presence of an optical viewfinder is unusual in today’s compact market (indeed one of the few others is Canon’s own IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS), and its physical location limits the size of the screen to...
Pros: High resolution images., Good screen with optional viewfinder., Great battery life with viewfinder., Manual control over exposure.
Cons: Lacking true wide-angle coverage., No optical zoom while filming., No HD video or HDMI port., Modest burst mode at 1.3fps.
Summary: Despite the inevitable hype from having the world’s biggest resolution – and the inevitable disappointment that follows – the 980 is a beautiful compact camera that takes beautiful photos. Its 10MP little brother, the 870, has a wider lens and larger screen for £75 less – a real bargain.
Conclusion: Obviously I like the picture quality and this is the most important factor for me when choosing a camera. The big question is whether or not you are prepared to pay the premium price. If money is not so important and top quality is all that counts this is likely to be a good choice. If on the other hand you are not looking for the absolute best for your snapshots then there are cheaper options around that you are likely to be just as happy with.
Summary: This is another in the range of marvellous Canon Ixus offerings that I have enjoyed reviewing over the years. Not only me but those of my friends who have taken my advice and purchased one of these little Ixus offerings.
