Review Summary

Samsung L77 is a compact digicam that includes a 7-megapixel imager, 7x internal optical zoom lens, High ISO capabilities (up to 1600), VGA movie mode, 2.5-inch LCD, etc. It is fully automatic and ideal for beginners or for anyone who doesn’t want to get confused or go into complicated controls of menu options. You can use Auto, EPS, or one of 11 pre- programmed scene modes. Samsung’s L77 design is good, attractive, easy to use, slim and nice. Samsung L77 is less than an inch thick and weighs just 5.5 ounces with battery and SD card making it one of Samsung’s lightest, most compact digital cameras. It uses a conventional joypad and buttons to navigate its simple functions. What is really astonishing is its zoom .The Samsung L77’s 38 to 266mm-equivalent lens stands out as its biggest feature but does not distort the camera’s look. Its lens stays completely inside the camera at all times. Due to this internal mechanism, the camera remains slim, even when zooming all the way in. The zoom also works when recording 30 fps VGA video with the camera’s movie mode. The L77 uses Samsung’s Electronic Picture Stabilization to measure camera shake and adjust the image in-camera. After 1.9 seconds from power-on to capturing its first shot, the L77 takes a slow 2.4 seconds between each additional shot, with the flash turned off increasing to 3.1 seconds with the onboard flash turned on. Its shutter lagged barely half-second with a high-contrast target, and 1.6 seconds with a low-contrast target. Burst mode shot four 7-megapixel stills in 3.2 seconds for a rate of 1.3 fps. Shots taken at both the wide-angle and telephoto ends of the lens remain clear, sharp and accurate. If you are looking for a simple and pocket-friendly camera then Samsung L77 is just for you.

The Samsung L77 is equipped with a 7.1 mega pixel true-colour filtered CCD to guarantee you topnotch image quality with every shot, and enough resolution for printing up to poster size. The Samsu…

The pictures failed to impress and I've seen better results from cheaper cameras. The slimness and large zoom are a great benefit, and if it wasn't for the picture quality the camera would get a high score, but essentially fails on its primary function. The L77 is attractive, easy to use, the menus are split down into three parts, but in this case it doesn't seem to detract. Read more

One of the biggest drawbacks to ultracompact cameras is that you're usually stuck with a 3x optical zoom. The 7.1-megapixel Samsung L77 changes this by shoehorning a 7x optical zoom lens into a very compact body. It's also easy to use (with a little practice) and a fast operator, all things considered—which is why it's so disappointing that the overall image quality isn't better. Read more

  1. Need a digital street camera...

...has not been released. Sigma has recently stated the camera is being redesigned. he GRD II and G9 have many happy owners. There are a number of threads in the archives, though less of the GRD II as it's only recently been released. No clue regarding the Samsung L77.

  2. Suggestions....

Other than the Panasonic TZ3 , there aren't many small digitals with 5x optical zoom or greater. Here are some ultracompacts with at least 5x optical zoom: Olympus Stylus 830, 820, Casio EXv8, v7, Samsung L77, NV11, Sony T-200. None of them have gotten great reviews.

  4. camera that supports optical zoom while...

    a) Canon TX1.(optical stabilization). It has good IQ too. First choice. b) Cameras from Samsung NV series will allow pausing too! But only digital I.S. will work. e.g. NV8,15,20,11,10 (all with 3x zoom). Samsung L77 (7x zoom) is good for movie mode, but images suffer from purple fringing problems. c) Casio EX-V7 (7x zoom). Sanyo CG6 (5x zoom), Sanyo HD1,2,1000 (10x zoom) saunder weininger wrote: -- Best Wishes, Ajay http://picasaweb.google.com/ajay0612
