Review Summary

The Canon EOS 400D, a highly recommended camera, is an entry level-priced DSLR with professional level image quality and capabilities. This time Canon lives up to its standard with its Digital Rebel XTi. This Canon EOS 400D is easy enough for a beginner to use and at the same time, its good enough to be used by professional photographers. The Canon EOS 400D like its predecessor sports a bigger screen and Picture Styles, but still keeps the same sensor as its predecessor. There are also a higher resolution sensor and a new active dust removal system. A certain reviewer was genuinely happy that he could take pictures with this camera without having to make his young kids stay still to strike a pose. The same is expressed by another user. Coming back to this Canon, the Canon EOS 400D is a bit compact and lightweight by weighting approximately 4 ounces more than its 17.1-ounce predecessor, unusually fast and responsive, much more intelligently designed with shooting-friendly layout. Known to be well-balanced, thanks to its small, exceptionally light kit lens that are attached to the larger and heavier 16mm-to-35mm (25.6mm-to-56mm equivalent) lens. The huge main LCD can be used as a read-in of the methods of monitoring the settings. Features that are displayed there on the LCD cannot be seen in the viewfinder. Features like the ISO speed, white balance, battery level, and other useful settings. According to CNET, most amateurs will find all the essentials: a handful of manual, semimanual, and automatic exposure modes; user-selectable nine-point autofocus, and AI Servo autofocus for moving subjects; and simultaneous raw-plus-JPEG capture. The only known lacking feature in this camera is the spot meter as it supplies only evaluative, center-weighted average, and partial center-weighted metering. Aside from that, it is a great camera to be used.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi offers an unbeatable combination of performance, ease-of-use and value. It has a newly designed 10.1 MP Canon CMOS sensor plus a host of new features including a 2.5…

  1. Best for Entry-level Users (Canon EOS 400D)

    Reviewer: ProductSifter

Innovative features include a proximity sensor under the viewfinder eyepiece so the monitor shuts off when you put the camera to your eye. Clearly defined menu screens are simply displayed in black text on a white background, making it ultra-easy to read. What’s more, a highly skilled automatic mode, and several semi-automatic modes, are on hand to take care of all settings for users not ready to tackle full-scale manual settings. It all adds up to a highly attractive... Read more

  2. Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (EOS 400D) Digital Camera Review

The camera is compatible with all external flashes, but it works best with the 220EX, 430EX, and 580EX Speedlites. For macro shooting you may want to check out the MR-14EX ring lite or the MT-24EX twin lite. Read more

Although the 400D is a pricey entry-level SLR, its capture quality, versatile manual settings, lightweight design and interface more than balance the equation. Highly-recommended. Read more

  5. Pushing ISO in Photoshop

    Reviewer: Ken Rockwell
    18 June 2007

Digital cameras change ISO the same way we can lighten images in Photoshop. It is trivial to shoot at the equivalent of any ISO. Of course noise gets worse, but highlight rendition is often extended. I always shoot JPG. You can also do this in raw. This process doesn't care about format. Read more

This camera is great. Although my title suggests this is best bet for beginners, this camera can be great for intermediate to semi-pro photographers with a limited budget. Pros - Relatively economic compared to other higher end Canon D-SLRs. Value for money. I purchased: - This camera (body only) - a 4 GB CF card - Canon 200dg Camera bag - Canon 50mm f1.8 lens - Extra battery for Canon All this for a total of $690. - Excellent resolution pictures with a lot of detail.... The Canon Digital Rebel was my first DSLR and I would absolutely reccomend it to those looking to advance from a point and shoot camera. It has a newly designed 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor plus a ton of new features including a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, an exclusive EOS Integrated Cleaning System, and Canon's Picture Style technology, all in a lightweight, comfortable to hold body. The auto modes leave all the guess work to the amateurs and the Manual features leave the cam... I've always wanted to step up into a more professional style of photography, and now that I have this Canon I am ready to become an avid photog! I bought the 17-55mm Image Stabilized lens to start out with. The photos I have taken so far are absolutely fabulous! The camera is idiot-proof, I am taking great pictures and I haven't even read the owner's manual yet. The battery seems to last a LOT longer than regular point and shoot cameras I've had in the past. The auto ... Read more

I don't know what made CNET Asia give this camera a lower than 8 rating, maybe it's because they really don't have a true-blue photographer who can critique DSLR performance the way websites like dpreview.com does it. This camera is very highly recommended in nearly every credible camera review website. And it's because of quick performance, enhanced usability, idiot-proof menu, crisp and clear image quality and available of accessories after-market. The kit lens is s... Read more
