This cheaper version is a big step down in sharpness
2 September 2012
Summary: This cheaper version is a big step down in sharpness from the original lens priced around $800. I owned a higher priced one I bought a few years ago and loved it - sharp images aways and a versatile workhorse. The newer lens is a bad cost reduction and I think worthless- I think my next camera buy will be away from Panasonic cameras (after buying three generations) so I can get a sharp zoom lens.
Summary: The focus ring on this lens has the "feature" that the faster you turn it, the more the focus changes. As opposed to normal lenses that change focus in proportion to how much you turn the ring, not how fast. While this may be an interesting novelty, it makes it extremely difficult to control focus in a predictable, uniform way. Experienced photographers know the feeling of quickly locking into focus, but that's not possible with this mechanism.
