Great starter/walkaround lens for BMPCC

tfedward, Amazon
28 October 2014
  • Summary: I actually use this lens on my BMPCC (Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera), so keep that in mind for this review. Pros: -Pretty good OIS for handheld shots. -Physical OIS switch. Even with the new firmware on the BMPCC that powers OIS lenses without a switch, I still prefer having the OIS switch to turn off when using a tripod. -Lightweight -Good zoom range for walking around town -Price -Sharp! -Size Cons: -My only real con is the barrel distortion at 14mm.

Nice lens

MDGColorado, Amazon
31 January 2013
  • Summary: This is the highly-regarded first version of Panasonic's kit lens. It has a quality appearance, smooth zoom ring (just try the zoom action on entry-level Canon / Nikon DSLR lenses for comparison), well-damped focus, metal camera interface, and good sharp optics. I read so much about the mediocrity of the subsequent 14-42 and decided this one was worth $150 more.

Sharp but long 'n skinny

P. K. Frary "Gochugogi", Amazon

  • Summary: I have an Olympus E-P3 with 17mm 2.8 pancake. I love the pancake for candids and being able to carry the camera in my coat pocket, but wanted a zoom for flexible outdoor shooting. After shopping around the Panasonic 14-45 landed on my doorstep. It's small compared to a DSLR lens but propelled my slim E-P3 out of my pocket and into a camera bag, drawing the rig dangerously close to EOS Rebel size territory. With the included petal cutaway hood, it is really long.

Very Good Lens

  • Summary: This lens used to be the kit lens for the GH1, but now is just sold separately. It cost a little more than the 14-42, but is worth the extra money. One drawback of this lens though, is its plastic cheap feeling body, but then again this isn't a thousand dollar lens. It is very light and easy to pack, though.

Excellent little kit zoom!

Sean, Amazon
7 August 2010
  • Summary: Compact, lightweight, quick autofocus, effective stabilization, and excellent sharpness. No light falloff issues. My main camera and lens combo is the Nikon D200 with a $1,300 17-55mm f/2.8 as the standard zoom; so I am used to professional quality lenses that produce excellent edge-to-edge sharpness, neutral color, consistent brightness across the frame, very little flare, etc. I bought the Panasonic GF1 and 20mm f/1.7 as a more portable alternative to my DSLR.
