Summary: The lens hood HB-35 on my 18-200mm VR broke in an unfortunate earthquake (a big mirror fell on it... yikes), and rather than go without, I decided to shop for a replacement. I looked very carefully at the aftermarket hoods offered elsewhere, but after reading some negative reviews about them (the fit is not very good), I decided not to take a chance. J&R has the best price on the hood as far as I could find, so I placed my order [...]The item [...
Pros: Durable, Easy To Use, Lightweight, Original Nikon good fit, Reliable
Summary: Shades the lens and protects it from hard handlling. Breaks a little too easily. Using a hood protects the lens in the same way that a bumper protects a car. It takes a beating and sometimes breaks to stop major damage to the expensive stuff.
Summary: I lost my original when it dropped from a hot air balloon. I must have slightly bumped the lens – the hood does what it supposed to do – I just wish the friction (twist) attachment was more secure. I guess it serves a purpose – if you bump the lens – it will pop off – maybe taking some of the impact from the expensive hardware.
Summary: The original hood fell off twice and, by the time I succumbed to buying the replacement I had only found it once. Since then, of course, the original has reappeared on a path I hadn't suspected losing it on. Anyway, the hood works fine, stays on at least as well as the original and now I find myself in HB-35 clover!
Summary: This lens hood just works. It securely snaps into place and will not let go. I purchased this one because I bought the lens used and it didn't come with the hood. So, I am not sure how the original one fit, but I don't see how it could fit any better.
Summary: I purchased this after losing my first. It pretty much stays on the lens for protection - always on in the daytime, so I have to say it works to reduce flare. How much? I don't know because I haven't tried to shoot without it in place when it's needed. I like the speed of the mount, which makes putting the camera away easy - twist, flip, twist is all that was added to that routine. Overall, well worth it for the peace of mind alone.
