Excellent pro camera with mostly great features...just a few things that could have been better.

JAMES M NOGUEIRA, Amazon
27 February 2014
  • Summary: I've been using this camera for several years now, and it has been a real workhorse. It is ruggedly built, the picture quality is very good (even in low-light), and it is reasonably easy to be used handheld. There are a few things that could have been better. The microphone shock mount that comes with the camera is flimsy, and can easily be broken off.

Provided me years of great service. Reliable, capable, and still extremely great even in 2014

  • Summary: There's a reason this camera is still being used widely, even though newer models are out (PMW-200) I got an EX1 right when it first came out and shot a feature on it, we were all amazed at the quality. Coming from a Z1U, this was a whole new ballgame. Even though i now use a C100, i miss the EX1 in many ways...

  • Summary: There's a reason this camera is still being used widely, even though newer models are out (PMW-200) I owned the non-r version, i'll note the differences between the two, but the main difference is that the R has HDMI. I got an EX1 right when it first came out and shot a feature on it, we were all amazed at the quality. Coming from a Z1U, this was a whole new ballgame. This Camera is a game changer for it's niche!

Jake "Jake", Amazon
1 February 2014
  • Summary: Superb camera for it's price point (under 10k). Nothing in it's comparable market comes close to this camera. Great build quality, 3x half-inch sensors, superb image - handles blacks really well, and very well designed. Perfect 2nd camera for larger productions or 1st camera for lower budget docs. Only issue I've found is a sticky slow zoom, which I have tolerated due to how great it performs otherwise. Sony will have to go a long way to better this baby!

The Best Pro Camera for the Price

Amazon Customer "Lloyd Lopez", Amazon
8 February 2012
  • Summary: Our studios use 4 of these for a cooking show on a big international network. They work flawlessly. I've seen some with 600+ hours on them and still running perfectly. If you're looking at this camera, you already know what it can do, so I won't rehash what everyone's already raved about on other sites. Just wanted to add my real-world 5-star rating for a truly excellent piece of camera gear.

Just fantastic

V. Sassmannshausen, Amazon
22 August 2008
  • Summary: This camera seems to split the forums. It's a camera that will not work in tourist auto mode, it would be a waste of money to do so. Having tested the cam now 2 month, it will be the main cam for my movie short. The image is brilliant, the options are great to improve the needed quality. The hot discussed rolling shutter, is nearly not visible when the shutter is set to a longer duration. Which supports the mostly wanted CINEMA look, and so no problem for me.

Solid performer, with a few quirks

N. Csakany "Nick C", Amazon
18 August 2008
  • Summary: The EX1 model is Sony's first XDCAM model specifically targeted at the higher end of the prosumer segment. It offers the best image quality in its class, bar none.... if the operator is aware of the CMOS vs. CCD sensor differences. The most important item, if one has only shot CCD cameras, is to be aware of the rolling shutter situation on CMOS cameras. This is not a problem by any means, just someting that one needs to compensate for when planning the shot.

Best thing since Super 16mm!

H. T. J. Dahms "Film Director", Amazon
28 May 2008
  • Summary: This is not a technical review! I'm a screenwriter and film director and formerly exclusively worked on 35mm and 16mm. I bought the PMW-EX1 in January 2008, shortly after its release and have just shot an arthouse feature film on it. This is undoubtedly the best thing since Super 16mm for filmmaking. In fact I prefer it to 35mm: if you set your scene up smartly, you need almost no lighting. It is light and manageable, so you do not need a huge camera crew.
