Summary: Great camera with built-in GPS capability that records latitude and longitude in both your videos and still pictures. Touch screen does get a little dirty when using it. The Sony VCT-50AV and other larger sizes of this model is a great addition because of the remote control function on the tripod handle. The on/off function on this camera is built-in to the display and a button that is hidden when the display is closed.
Summary: This is my first camcorder. I use it for the usual kinds of things and also for underwater video (with a separate underwater case obviously). I've found the large storage to be great; on an African safari I had plenty of room for video despite some long, long shots. When you're waiting for a hippo to do something interesting, you might wait a long time. This camera had the storage to allow lots of long shots. Ditto underwater sometimes.
Summary: This camera provides a great picture in varied lighting conditions. My only complaint is the software. Burning HD movies (which is the point of this camera) is hard to impossible to do with the provided software as well as many different packages you can buy.
Summary: It's a good video cam that takes high quality stills. Has built in GPS which seems unnecessary. Zoom function is only optical X10 which is lacking in many applications. It has no digital hybrid zoom. Remote control works poorly with extremely short range. It is easy to operate and does take a nice high def video and picks up audio very well. The stills are great quality for a vid cam but zoom function is even more limited. All in all---- i'd buy it again.
Summary: I bought this camcorder because I always wanted a small camera that is easy to use, and I really like this camcorder because it's easy to use, has a very good image and you can shake the hand, the image does not shake, not I have nothing to complain about the purchase that I made a very good camcorder.
Summary: I had been looking for a new hdtv video camera and out of all that I had looked at an compared this camera seems to fill the bill well. The only down side I have is Sony's soft ware other than that it looks like it will be a good fit.
FALSE ADVERTISING ON MAC COMPATABILITY -- MAC USERS BEWARE!
1 October 2010
Summary: Sony makes an excellent video camera, and this (my third) is no exception. However, be cautious on one MAJOR flaw for which Sony MISLEADS customers! MAC USERS BEWARE! The only reason I purchased this camera was for the compatability with my iMac 5 (Power PC chip; Tiger 10.4 OS). The HDR-XR550V manual which came with the camera (page 39, etc.) states how to download Mac-compatible PMB (Picture Motion Browser) software from Sony.
Summary: My wife wanted this camera for her birthday so I bought it even though I would not buy it for myself as we don't have a 1080 TV! I'd rather have bought a 720 camera which is quarter the size and price! I would have still bought a SONY camera but 720 instead of a 1080.
Summary: Pros: * High quality video * High quality still photos * Internal hard disk drive, means no switching tapes * Can use MemoryStick Pro Duo or SD memory cards * Manual focus knob * Small size Cons: * LCD touch screen still could use improvement * I don't like that it turns on the moment you open the LCD panel * No Firewire port, USB is much slower than Firewire for data transfer * The GPS geotagging is limited to working only with the Sony software, which does NOT work...
