Sony HDR-XR520V: Review

Electronics Made Easy
6 November 2010
  • Summary: Handheld cameras are coming down in price, making the newer versions more affordable for anyone looking to enter the market. Despite is bulky appearance, the 240GB HDR-XR520V is a fully capable High Def handycam that can accomplish your image capture and video recording tasks easily. There may be better value for money in other models, but for a top of the range handycam, this unit might be the answer.
  • Pros: 240GB Harddrive, Geo-tagging via inbuilt GPS, Fully HD Capable, 12 megapixel Image capture
  • Cons: A little bulky

Sony Handycam XR500V

9 March 2010
  • Summary: Though their geotagging capabilities are mostly novelty and their interfaces could use a complete overhaul, the top-notch video quality, performance, and consumer-friendly feature sets of the Sony Handycam HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR520V make them worthy camcorder options. Both are overpriced, but since 14 hours of recording time is plenty--especially if supplemented with flash media--the HDR-XR500V is the better deal of the two.
  • Pros: First-rate video quality and performance; geotagging videos is fun, if limited.
  • Cons: Annoying menu system; no wind filter; no manual shutter-speed, iris, or audio controls; relatively big and heavy; expensive.

A Sony handycam with a 240GB HDD, GPS and Full HD recording

Good Gear Guide.au
18 February 2010
  • Summary: The Sony HDR-XR520 is a rock-solid HDD video camera that improves on its predecessors in nearly every way. On the other hand, it's unlikely that many consumers will be able to afford it at its current price point.
  • Pros: Good video quality, excellent stills mode, 240GB hard drive
  • Cons: Video quality slightly below Canon HF S10, depressingly unaffordable

Expert Review

2 October 2012
  • Pros: Sehr gutes Low-Light Verhalten, Blendenrad + Touch-Focus bilden gutes Zusammenspiel
  • Cons: Kaum manuelle Eingriffsmöglichkeiten
