There are many benefits that go along with the Sony Handycam HDR-UX1, but with that being said it may not be the best option for you. Many people buy the HDR-UX1 thinking that they are getting everything they need, but in the end they are actually quite disappointed. In order to avoid this problem you really need to know what the HDR-UX1 has to offer, and if it is going to fit in with what you are trying to accomplish.

The main problem with the HDR-UX1, and the reason that we do not recommend it, is because of compatibility issues. According to Sony, there are really only two places where you can play the discs that you record with the HDR-UX1. Those being the Sony Playstation 3 gaming system and a Blu-ray disc player. The problem with these two players is that they are both pretty much obscure. Not everybody wants a Playstation, and at this point in time there are only two Blu-ray disc players on the market.

While this is a large drawback that will probably keep you away from the HDR-UX1, there are some nice benefits that it offers as well. For instance, this model offers sharp image quality with little to no fuzz. Additionally, the build quality and ease of handling are typical for Sony products.

Many people have also complained that still photos taken by the HDR-UX1 are average at best. So even though you get great video quality, your still photos will lag behind the competition quite a bit.

Although this is a nice camcorder, we cannot recommend it due to the compatibility issues that are present. There are similar models for sale that offer just as many features and benefits, but do not pigeon hole you into only being able to play the discs in obscure players.
