  • Summary: This is great for collecting precious memories and standard video camera use. I was hoping for something a little higher end but bought this. I got the best deal on amazon.

Good dash cam video

Window_Seat, Amazon
24 June 2013
  • Summary: So I use this for mounting in a Class 8 (semi) rig and have been for nearly 5 years, and I use a Fat Gecko Camera and Camcorder Mount so I can have it as close to the front windshield as possible. The mount makes it so there is virtually no shaking, even when going over bumps. I have used the hard drive in the past, but the shaking and "bumps" causes the recording to shut down abruptly, and when it does, the screen will say "buffer overrun" or something to that effect.

Excellent camcorder but missing some of the important features

gerrysherman, Ebay
4 July 2011
  • Summary: Great little camera. I am a pro videographer and use this camera as a "second" camera for candid side, back, close shots. I love how easy is is to transfer the video into the computer using the Sony software. My only disappointments: 1) There is no LAN jack so I can't use the tripod handle controls, 2) To adjust white balance while shooting, you have to go into the the menu screen and click through to that control . . .

"Nothing better for the money."

gspnam, CNET
25 July 2010
  • Pros: Great video quality, in good light.
  • Cons: Incomprehensible compromises, poor low light performance and auto focus, and manual focus is no walk in the park. Paging through menus to change basic setting is a PITA, and slow.

Sony Rocks!

tauji, Ebay
7 May 2009
  • Summary: Although slightly older model, I decided on the SR-12 for the 10MP still camera feature in this particular model. Also, unlike newer models that are based on Memory Stick only, the 120GB hard drive can last a MUCH longer time! The pictures are crisp and I have already got one blown up to poster size with great details! Video recording quality is good - with excellent zoom. Love the touch screen LDC to zip through various options and reordings etc.

Would you ship a thousand dollar camcorder like a five dollar book?!!

B. Laplante, Amazon
31 January 2009
  • Summary: The camera is a great product, no doubt about it~ There are plenty of reviews on that issue. But let's talk about the intelligence and customer care behind shipping an expensive, hard disk drive based camcorder in a box with zero protection. That's right, not one ounce or penny spent on preventing damage to a piece of delicate electronics that is shipped from across the country, in the middle of the winter!

"Almost perfect! Just don't try to record a concert..."

insaneshayne, CNET
3 January 2009
  • Pros: Recording quality is awesome as is the ability to take a snapshot of something WHILE recording video. The still camera functionality is actually quite good. Audio quality is great in either 5:1 or 2 ch stereo.
  • Cons: No audio level control. It gives you either "auto" or "low-level" but no ability to manually turn up or down levels. This unit CAN NOT RECORD IN AREAS WITH HIGH NOISE LEVELS. It will go into error state. There is no workaround or fix for this!

Great camera but need lots of CPU power to edit video

vlim, Amazon
3 December 2008
  • Summary: I moved from a Sony Hi-8 camera that we had for 5 years prior to this, and the first word out of my mouth was "Wow!" The tape-based camera was great for an NTSC camera. The video and audio quality were great for home movies and the occasional training videos that I used it for at work. Aside from the fact that it was a standard def picture, the biggest complaint was for the need for tapes. Needless to say, that old camera is now gathering dust.

Good but...

Ralph Kuser "seeking intelligent life", Amazon
17 September 2008
  • Summary: This is a good camcorder but it definitely needs Firewire. Amazon lists it as having I-Link which is Firewire but it doesn't. A little slow to transfer data to your computer with USB.
