Just like every Sony camcorder, the HDR-HC1has a lot to offer. The fact of the matter is that Sony has positioned themselves at the top of this industry, and until somebody dethrones them things are always going to be this way. If you are looking for an affordable HD unit that is built with quality in mind, you do not have to look any further than the Sony HDR-HC1. At a hair under $2,000 the Sony HDR-HC1 is the best option to hit the market to date. And this is not just because the low price; the HDR-HC1 also has a lot to offer in performance, usability, and features.

As far as video performance is concerned, it does not get any better than what the Sony HDR-HC1 has to offer. With a top of the line CMOS chip this camcorder has a lot to offer. Although we were not sure of how this unit would perform, it outdid all of our expectations. In bright light conditions the Sony HDR-HC1 is rivaled by none. It offers sharp images, crisp clear colors and much more.

In low light the Sony HDR-HC1 does not perform quite as well. This is not to say that it is a slouch, but it definitely loses something when the light dims. Color vibrancy seems to get lost in low light, and noise levels also begin to climb. While this can be a bit bothersome, it is nothing that is too overwhelming.

For a high end HD camcorder the Sony HDR-HC1 is about as small as it gets. It is easily the smallest HD camcorder to ever be available to consumers, and this alone has drawn a lot of people in. At about 1 ¾ pounds and very thin for a camcorder, the Sony HDR-HC1 will never get in your way. No, it won’t fit in your pocket, but at the same time it will not take up too much space in your purse or small bag.

The bottom line is that the Sony HDR-HC1 is as good as it gets. Sony knows how to make top of the line camcorders, and this has never been more evident than it is with the HDR-HC1.
